Just found I need to get the mounting rings/cups separately. Like these

Yes, you do need the special fitting tool(s). The mounting rings are available in stainless steel or alloy, think they’re around £20 a pair steel, £30 for alloy. You can fit them using one lockring tool, but it’s easier with two, stops one side unwinding as you tighten the opposite cup.

As r6ymy says. You just need one to fit the cups. A spare tool costs about £12 to £14.

Well, I’ve looked all over the place and can’t find a Phil Wood BB seller (UK), preferably one I can phone and speak to as I want to ask about length requirement.

    Can anyone help on that?

Call Tim at Sideways, he normally has the bits in stock.

cheers r6ymy. I’ll give him a ring tom AM.

Shimano have stopped making the UN72 which I have used in the past and like. Seems an expense to go to for the PW…?

Agree it’s difficult to argue on VFM. I managed to get a brand new old stock UN72 off ebay a few months ago to use as a spare when the Phil Wood went off to have the bearings replaced. I’ve got another UN72 that was in my main bike for a few years and then in my sons bike for a couple of years and the bearings are still good. Only trouble is the mounting rings are pretty mangled now.
The good thing about a Phil Wood is that it can be rebuilt.

Where are you based, maybe you could borrow the tools off me or someone else on the forum?

I was thinking t’other day that there are no decent mid-range square BBs any more. You can spend £15 on a plastic Shimano one, or loads on a Royce or Phil (which are totally worth it IMHO). It you want to spend £30-60, tough luck.

And don’t anyone say ‘that’s cos square taper is pants’, because square taper rocks.

BTW, Hubjub usually have a lot of Phil BB stuff in stock. They’re always up for a phone call.
