I recently changed from a POS Samsung tv to a Panasonic and set it up in the identical way I had the old tv set up with the optical out from the tv going into a soundbar (LG).

On the Samsung the soundbar would auto switch off once the tv was switched off (and auto switch on when the tv was switched on too) however I have noticed on the new tv the soundbar remains switched on permanently. If I manually switch off the soundbar (even with the tv on standby) it will just switch back on. It is (correctly?) set as the output destination for sound in the tv settings and I can’t find any further settings to change how it behaves. It appears as if the tv is continuing to send an optical signal even on standby so the soundbar assumes it should remain on.

Has anyone any ideas or had a similar situation?

I think it might be that Samsung have figured out how users want their additional sound systems to work.
Had a q60 qled briefly and soundbar connected over optical. Samsung could turn it on/off and adjust the volume all from the tv remote.
Replaced with a Sony xbr900f and now have to use the soundbar remote to switch it on, off and volume.. rubbish

    “appears”?

Find out. Does it stop if you disconnect the cable?

Does the soundbar have HDMI? Try the ARC (Audio Return Channel) – it should be labelled on the TV HDMI inputs.

I had a similar prob with optical I seem to remember – new soundbar wouldn’t turn off/on without a separate remote, sent it back IIRC.

Hmm that sounds an idea @ocean – I will have a look later.

I can confirm that Samsung TVs are magic. I’ve got mine connected via optical cable to a cheap Amazon DAC which then connects to my ancient Arcam amp via RCA connectors. The TV remote can adjust the volume on the amp, mute it and also turn it on and off.

I keep meaning to research how it does it.

I have a Panasonic TV connected to a Sony AV amp. The audio is via optical as I don’t have an HDMI cable with an audio return channel (ARC).

Powering on/off the TV also controls the amp so assuming the signal via the optical cable is controlling that.

I seem to recall this only working if I enable VIERA Link on the TV (realise it’s a Panasonic thing but seems other manufactures support this standard but may call it different things e.g. Bravia Link on Sony products).

So it turns out my soundbar doesn’t have HDMI input anyway so I’m going to have to live with it not switching off. Not a big deal I guess.
