Getting thoughts for my winter tyres(or current summer tyres at the moment!) and have been thinking along the lines of Panaracer. My first choice would be a Trailraker 1.95 which i want to put on the front wheel.Seems to cover most bases and will run ok on roots and tarmac without any incident. My thinking was to try the 1.8 mud on the back as theres not quite as much clearance.Whats your thoughts? Is it as versatile as the Trailraker and not going to give me any nasty moments on tarmac or roots and wet rock? Looking at a allrounder rather than a dedicated and specific mud tyre.

If they're anything like the Fire XC Pro standard they'll be shite. I think the "pro" element is being able to keep the bike from sliding out in anything remotely resembling a bend, root or gravel!

Back to Contis for me I think!

I have had mud pro on the back purely for muddy XC events which are mostly muddy fields. It's very narrow and uncushioned. The spikes dig into slop well but it's pretty useless on rocks and roots. This is why I gave up on it for round here (Somerset).

    I'd go for the Trailwreckers

A good deep mud specific tyre, but pretty much outdated by more modern designs. If you want proper thin look at maxxis medusa 1.8s or conti xc 1.5s, the medusas are better mud tyres though.

did mountain mayhem last year solo on them.

Ace tires – dont roll bad on the road neither

Was one of the few riders actually managing to ride the off camber section along the back at 1 in the morning at mayhem.

Took me to 11th place so cant have been terrible. Didnt clog , cleared well and cut down to the grip well.

as buzz says useless on rocks.

Found the conti 1.5s to be shite at mayhem , propper thin but lacked any real grip.

    Not used medusas

Any pictures of bikes with trailrakers 1.95's in.Just to see how they measure up for clearance?

Mud Pros are good but superceded by the trail raker which is better for directional grip, particularly on the front. That said, I did several muddy MMs on Mud Pros and was flying past people so they clearly do grip well.

No pics but you won't have any clearance issues with Trailrakers unless you're trying to fit them in a road frame 🙂

Even on my oldest mtb with the worst clearance, there's tons of room.

IMO trailrakers are brilliant full on mud condition tyres, and that means I reserve them only for race days (honest!) – i.e. if it's a sh1te mudfest of a course, then on go the trailrakers and bingo I can ride like a mud master (yup, our team even managed to win last years SITS on them) – but they are horrid on day to day trails round here (peak district) since we don't realy get much gloopy mud here, instead we get very wet peat bogs and loads of gritty trails….

for all-round winter tyres, then Bonty MudX are divine and much more predictable through rocky sections.

Used to use the XCProMud tyres, and yes they are ok, but too hard a compound for every day use (i.e. similar to it's replacement, the Trailraker)

found them too slippy but clear the mud very well.

    love them….

rocks and roots are interesting…. but they are better than trailrakers IMHO

A tyre that clears well but roles fast is the scwalbe smart sam… uninspiring initially… but then you realise they seem to do everything very well… Just great all round tyre… light in a wire bead as well.

    work fantastic in tubeless..

They're good in the very sticky mud round here as they clear quickly, not great on wet roots/rocks though.

Ace tires – dont roll bad on the road neither

I found them rather 'buzzy' on the road!
