Old-style Inbred – seat post size?

Just waiting on an old style Inbred{slidey dropouts} ariving in the post, can anyone say what size seatpost I should be looking for?

pps Is there any sneaky way of retro fitting disc brakes to this? {short of some sort of welding project – which I am not up to!}

My one is 27.2, have got a Blue use alien one you could buy, 400mm, well used and scratched, but strong and light, and no signs of failure with my 14stone weight! £25posted if you’re interested.

If it’s got actual sliding dropouts it’s got a disk mount already. The V brake posts were bolt-on on those frames though so it may be missing those, but I think on-one do them as spares for a horrendous price.

If it’s an older frame with track ends and no disk mount then there’s a nasty bodge thing you used to be able to get which bolts on to the V post and the axle.

Mmm, could be be track ends then, "nasty bodge" sounds a bit risky. Think I’ll leave it with V brakes then.

I’m confused. You say it’s disc only then want to know how to bodge discs onto it…

Is it slidy dropout or horizontal dropout (trackend)?

That is a result of me typing in a rush before heading out earlier. Meant V-brake only. Sorry for confusion. And it’s horizontal{trackend} dropouts.

Sorry to mislead you MussEd, by "nasty bodge" I just mean they look horrible rather than being risky. I believe they work OK.

A2Z used to make one, I don’t think they still do though. Try a WTD in the classifieds maybe?

I’ve got one of those old trackend dropout Inbreds. It’s got a weird blue USE post in a shim!

What size seat clamp is it anyone know? It’s about time I stuck a QR on.

That’s not the one I’m talking about mamadirt, the one I was thinking about has got a long arm which locates on the v-brake boss. I’ve seen your type of adapter for sale with the caveat that it only works on vertical dropouts, presumably that’s why there was some fettling rather than just bolting on!

That looks like the kind of thing I’m after, Mamadirt. Where did you get it? Do you know if they’re still available? Out of interest what size are those Dropoffs on your bike?

The old track-end Inbreds rock! XTR V brakes all the way (or Pauls if you’re feeling fancy).

No johnners, that one is designed for horizontal dropouts (the chain tensioner is on the inside of the dropout). For some reason the internet archive site is down at the mo so I can’t search for my old posts.

I bought mine (Quad QAB, iirc) from Raleigh UK but it no longer seems to feature on their site. It was also available from these folks but again doesn’t seem to be on the new site. If you do manage to get one, it will only work with cup and cone hubs (the cut out in the main part of the adaptor sits over the axle cone nut, the other side is knurled and the tensioner sits next to that on the inside of the dropout). I was a bit worried that my axle would be too short as with everything in place it was barely protruding into the dropout but the tensioner kept everything in place. I did try fitting a thinner cone nut and spacer but this just threw things out of alignment and the caliper ended up rubbing on my spokes. With everything fitted it only takes up a few extra mm of space and I reckon with a longer nutted axle it would be perfect.

Oh and MussEd, the Drop Offs are 130mm (old ’04 model) – it was a bit of an experiment but I quite liked the ride. Back to 400mm Planet X rigids at the mo’ though.
