Old But Good…

One day last year whilst bored at work I picked up a 2005 S-works stumpjumper on ebay for £500 and stuck on some bigger tyres, wider bars and 130mm RLCs to replace some dodgy marzocchis). And…I simply can’t get over how great it is to ride. It knocks the spots of my 2010 £3.5k Yeti and in fact any other bike I’ve owned on my local (surrey hills) trails. It zips along the trails like its arse is on fire and deals with just about everything I chuck at it. It gets airborne off the smallest roots and is easy to throw around once its up there. It loves dirt jumping and smaller drops but is also perfect on 40 milers.

Anyone owned one and/ or know of a bike currently on the market that rides like it?

Anyone owned one and/ or know of a bike currently on the market that rides like it?

I’ve ridden a 05 stumpy with slightly longer travel forks for a good few years now and it is a very lively bike.

Mate of mine had an 05/06 stumpy and it was really good, it inspired me to get an 05 Enduro and that was bloody good, I have an 06 Enduro now with modern parts on it and it is fantastic.

I would love to try a couple of new Spech bikes and see how good they are, I had a Pitch but the old Enduro is better. I think a new Camber will probably ride like your old Stumpy.

I’m playing around on my old 2004 enduro and it’s great. The only thing original is the rear shock, everything else is new and it’s just a good bike to ride.

Very popular on STW it seems. Like neilsonwheels, the only orginal parts on mine are the frame and shock (the latter PUSHed). I’ve fitted it with 2010 Revelations, Stylo 2.2 cranks, ProII / 717 wheels, Stroker Trails and wide Funn bars. The whole lot is around 27lb (or 4lb lighter than when it was new) and it feels very nice to ride too.

It’s not something I ever want to part with.

I don’t tend to think of 2005- as especially old.

i’ve an 05 enduro still going strong but my mind is wandering towards a new stumpy evo…..

i love my 2002 Scott Octane, it’s blinged up with Fox, Hope etc. It rides fantastic for trails. An adjustable Head Angle too! 😉

I loved my 05 Rocky Mountain Slayer to bits (quite literally as the frames still upstairs in the loft lol) It went everywhere, did everything, never let me down and was only really replaced because I fancied trying something else and then my Heckler came along.

Ancient Patriot 2000 is my usual bike… nothing wrong with it..

I have a mate who still rides his ’97 anodised blue Zaskar complete with 8spd XT and thumbies. He has some fully functioning RS Judy SL’s of a similar vintage as well.

Everytime I have a go on it, I wonder why I sold my ano Red ’96 version with Judy XC’s and period XTR. Miss that bike 🙁

Got mine off ebay a couple of years ago for £700. Maverick DUC forks, XTR groupset, Hope Mono 4s, etc…

I’m sure new bikes are better but i certainly don’t feel at much of a disadvantage compared to those on much newer (and more expensive) rides.

I had a 2005 S-work FSR120 Stumpjumper for 4 years. It was a great bike. I ran it with a set of Pikes and it was a great trail bike.

However it ate shock bushes for breakfast and it used to ghost shift when the bushes or bearings had a bit of play in them (which was most of the time!) and when you really ragged it the back end felt a bit twangy.

I swapped it for a Blur LT as I wanted a change but I still really like Stumpy FSR’s

They are indeed yellow which, combined with all the other colours, is indeed a a bit of an assault on the senses. My red one, on ther other hand, was tasteful red/black/silver….. complete with red Chicken Stix levers, straight-as-a-straight-thing red bars and X-lite bar ends and red brake boosters….. Oh, the shame! 😉

I had a 05 s works stumpy +1 for the shock bushes but the main words that spring to mind are pedal strike

+2 for shock bushes now i think about it…..and pedal strikes for that matter! Maybe rethinking the “enduro going stong” post of earlier. 😕

Ah yes, forgot that I did have pedal strike issues when I first bought it leading to one or two seriously sketchy moments but have learned to ride it so as to avoid them. Glad it gets a lot of support. Just want to find an up to date bike that rides like it. Perhaps will give the Camber a try..

I have a 97 Zaskar in anodised red which I’ve had since new. It is simply indestructible..

I ride a 2004 Maverick and I probably always will

My Enduro ate shock bushings early on, but since I fitted the ducktail mudguard to shield the shock it’s been absolutely fine. The current bushings have been on there for a number of years in fact without any noticable wear at all.

Despite my initial skepticism, the mudguard works a treat.

2004 nicolai helius ….. bombproof…..cant justify a new frame as its in perfectly good working order

I ride a 2005 Orange Five, It’s great. I’m running 130mm Tora 302’s but will be upgrading these (probably some U-Turn Sektors) in the next couple months but everything else on it is new and modern. It goes downhill like a dream and going up is not too bad either.

Waits for the haters……..

Actually it’s still got the original manitou 3 way shock on it, which despite what people say about it does work, although i’d like to replace it for a Fox van RC i reckon.
