Turned big 50 at Christmas and my wife and son bought me a 2013 Mega Pro as a complete surprise (I know lucky huh). Its superb but living in the Lakes and not being as fit as I was it can be a struggle on some of these climbs. So basically what would I need to do to convert to 2×10? Currently running a 34T on the front, 36-11 on rear. I know I should just get out more and get fitter but you know..

You’ll need a double chainset/cranks, medium length rear mech, 2×10 front mech and shifter and possibly a new chain. Not a cheap conversion unless you can get the whole lot as a bundle. You might be better getting a 42t rear cog and fitting that instead (that’s what I’ve done). I havent tested it yet tho…

Edit: you’ll still need a medium cage rear mech for the 42t

    Or you could try hope’s t-Rex 40t

Cheers all. Never thought about cranks. Need to reconsider I reckon!

I’m in the lakes with the same bike (it’s ace!) and have fitted a Works Components Narrow-Wide 30 tooth spiderless chainring in place of the 34 provided. So it’s 1×10 still, and you can remove both chain guides. If you add a 42 tooth rear and get a med-length rear mech you’d be sorted for a huge gear range, I’m not bothering though as it’s fine for me without.

Granny ring, front mech and shifter.

    What crank have you got?

Dirtydog, whatever it came with! Is it descender or something?? A lot of folk say go to 32 but the Hope 40t rex looks a possibilty. Today I was up round Tilberthwaite/Iron Keld and it didnt feel that far off usable, only the climb from the Tarn Hows footpath junction to Iron Keld was beyond a joke!
If I went for the Hope option would I need to change rear mech?

It depends if you’ve got a short cage rear mech or not. You’ll need at least a medium cage rear mech.

My 2012 mega pro had a 34t front single ring with chain device and 11-36 rear cassette. I’ve upgraded the frame and changed to a 34 raceface narrow wide chainring with a medium cage x9 clutch mech and added a oneup 42t cog on the back. It all looks very tidy. I’ve yet to test it as I’ve now got to send the frame back to the warranty dept (gutted – the bottle cage boss has snapped off inside the frame!)

Aye, just had a look, its a decender so yes new cranks as well.

Won’t be cheap to convert to a double, the Trex or similar will be by far the least expensive option.

Fit a 30t front ring and get a 40t rear cog from Hope/OneUp. £90 all in and will let you spin up steep hills.
