I am suddenly getting a ridiculous amount of ads, out of the blue. I automatically assumed that I had accidentally logged out but apparently not. Big hard-to-ignore adverts too.

Edit : And now everything has suddenly gone back to normal and the multitude of huge adverts have thankfully completely disappeared! Wtf was that about?

Is it my imagination or is logged-in browsing much quicker today? Has a laxative been administered to the forum software ?

10-20 seconds for a page load for me.  So, quicker might be relative but I’m going back to my alt account.

34 seconds to post that.  6 seconds with this account.

Spoke too soon. Back to business as usual.

especially with the very high page view rates we get.

are they actually that high? or just high relative to the server capacity you have?

this site is the slowest responding website I use by a significant margin and getting worse.

All been fine, until…someone sent me a message using the shonky messaging system on here – and I received 9 (NINE!) email notifications!!

I mean, he did send me 3 messages (probably due to that awful *Hit return sends the message* function), but I really don’t need 3 notification emails for each one! Other than that, @bruneep , it seems to be working!

Logged in I’m getting 10s + forum page load times on Safari on iOS or ipadOS or Brave on Windows. Logged out Brave or Edge on Windows gives me page load times so short I can’t be bothered to time them. Makes that subscription seem so worthwhile…

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but is there any way to look back at previous posts and topics started.

I know where it used to be but I’m pretty sure it’s not there now.

Do I assume it’s just me that can’t see the MEGASACK entry box?

(I did the day’s entries and the mega box told me to wait a couple of hours (man, that’s irritating) and then come back.  I did that and now the box is gone)

waaaah, I WANT MY MEGASACK <stamps puny little feet>

It seems to be getting ever slower loading pages. More than half a minute.

I am getting adverts almost making it impossible to read anything. Started yesterday and seems worse today.

Is there any news on when the delay for this site is going to be sorted? I am ><this close to giving up as it just takes ages for everything to load. Doesn’t happen on any other sites throughout the interweb and we now have 100mbs connection so certainly not slow.

    Just to add…

i noted above that people find it quicker if logged out so I tried it. And wow, instant loading of all content. Log back in to post this repoly and about a 30 second lag time to get back to this page. Not a good advert for subscription guys.

A conspiracy theorist would say that it’s a way to monetise the subscribers further .. it’s terrible I can’t use it logged in

Submitting a new post takes over a minute for me and regular page loads take 15-25 seconds.  It’s been like that for weeks now, with occasional tantalising but all too brief windows of sub 5 second loads before it slows to glacial pace again.

My membership has just renewed. I thought very seriously about cancelling it. I’ve tried the logged out thing and it just underlines the atrocious experience you get when you are logged in.  Why would you pay to have a significantly worse user experience than a logged-out non-subscriber? What sane person would choose to do that? **** knows, but that’s what I’ve just done.  I do know really, I really like it here and desperately want STW to carry on. I’m hanging on in there by the skin of my teeth in one last desperate hope that the new forum software Mark mentioned will make the subscriber experience tolerable again.  Am I a mug?  It feels like it sometimes 🙁

    @lunge
I think they switched that off temporarily in the hope of speeding things up a bit but could be wrong. don’t if/when it will be switched back on though, or how much of an improvement it made.

I’ve just turned off auto-renew! If I pay up again I’ll join again as zilog6129 🙂 at least I’ll get the new member discount

also getting loads of ads on mobile (iOS) when logged in which is really annoying. Vaguely remember this being mentioned a while back (maybe even a solution?) but can’t be arsed to wade thru pages and pages with 30s loads each time

So we have a very short cache period set for logged out users of something like 10 minutes (It may not be that I can’t remember). We reserve the zero caching for logged in users.

One thing you can do is a hard refresh on the forum index page if you are logged out and want a new page. Hard refresh on Chrome Mac is Command R on the keyboard. That requests a version of the page from the database rather than the cache.

also this is simply not the case for me (even when logged in). I can go and press Command-R now on the main screen and it won’t update the latest poster/time even though multiple people have actually made posts since!

It’s interesting how much of a poor user experience people will put up with, but still use the site. Demonstrates the power of habit in regard to digital platforms.

Sounds like the key issue (slow load times for prolific users) is only expected to be addressed with the new forum software. Don’t think we had a timescale for that, did we?

Not sniping BTW, just observing. Good luck with the fixes.

    I’ve just turned off auto-renew!

I’ve just done the same, thanks for the prompt. I don’t want my laziness to seem like tolerance or endorsement of the status quo.  I hope to renew next December, but now it will be a conscious decision based on whether the user experience has deteriorated, stayed the same or (hopefully) improved.

Just another subscriber here getting frustrated with the loading times. Sometimes I just don’t bother visiting the forum because I know I’m going to be staring at a loading bar for 30s.

I assume Mark’s explained why this is happening somewhere up the thread, but I don’t really care, I just want it to work.

Whatever you changed to make it do this, just undo it?

Has something changed in the forum text formatting?

If I look at the list of threads in, say the chat forum, it’s definitely smaller than it was a couple of days ago.

Changing the default font size setting in Opera on my phone makes no difference unless I open a thread, and then it’s bigger.

Not for me, I’ve just counted 82 threads listed on page 1 of the chat forum, including the pinned threads at the top.

Attempted to vote on one of the awards, got an email which allowed me to vote, but no validation email to follow-up.

Sent an email to editorial@singletrackworld.com on Wednesday, no reply. Nothing in junk folder. I wonder if my vote will have ‘timed out’ as I have been unable to complete the process.

@sharkbait –  I’ve experienced the same font size decrease you describe, on my Android using Chrome.

Has the site just got faster – everything seems to reload / refresh quicker as of this evening at some point.

Not the number of threads per page…. The font size.

Oh, my mistake. The font size appears the same for me as it always has.

Faster site has coincided with the start of Commando on film 4!

Really slow tonight. About 20 to 30 secs to load a thread. Ridiculous.

    Hello all, I’m having issues!

    1) when I look in my profile for my old posts, it tells me I don’t have any.

    2) When I try to search the forum using a search word, it throws up a couple of matches and a button saying “see older” and when I click that I get the “Oops Something went wrong” page.

It seems really fast right now! 23.17pm

Edit : Spoke too soon! For a minute or two pages were loading really quickly, now it’s slowed right down, although still a tad faster than recently

Edit 2 Actually pages are loading super quick, it’s only when posting a post or editing that it slows right down.

Slow-as for weeks. I also noticed also that my preferred method of opening 5-6 threads in new tabs (iOS on iPhone) can ‘lock’ Safari in that I can’t open the individual windows rendering the threads.

I usually feel that folk talking about cancelling their subscriptions is a bit drama queen-ish, but right now I feel like joining them, The forum is practically unusable. I get the money issues, and I’m prepared to believe it’s hard problem, but it’s gone on too long now.

I subscribe for the mag, the forum’s free as far as I can see. I used the forum for a while before ever subscribing. <shrug emoji>

Anyway, what I came here to report: I’m not sure if it’s a recent thing or intended but the like button seems to extend for the full height of the post in that little sidebar it sits in. Pretty sure just the icon used to be clickable. I keep liking posts by mistake (but generally leave the like there, ‘cos I’m nice)

Apologies if I missed it, but did we get a timeline on this new forum software being implemented?

Early in the new year, assuming it passes evaluation.

    So, October 2026. 🙂

    Joking aside,

I’ve had a play with the proposed new system (not STW’s implementation but via a third party) and it looks really good. There are probably “better” options sure, but one of the driving forces behind the choice and why they’ve stuck with BBpress for so long (AIUI) is that it has to play nicely with all the other systems that run behind the forum. There also has to be a sane migration path from the extant system, I have no visibility of this but I expect words like “arduous” were involved.

I can think of a lot more words that were probably involved 😉
