New flat pedals

I’m an all round mtber, doing everything from XC to DH. In the market for some new flatties, do I go for the nano’s as redily recommended on here or do i try the new Shimano Saints?

I’ve gone for the new Saints and they’ve been spot on so far.
Never had a set of Nano’s before so can’t really compare them though.

I’ve just got a pair of Nanos after Gusset Slim Jims, and they seem pretty spot on. I have bashed a pin out already, but I think that’s my fault rather than the pedals!

I’ve seen dmr vaults on offer – crc I think.

I quite like the look of the new saints – any other reviews?

the vaults are still nearly double the price of the saints and nano’s!

FWIW, I went for the Nanos over the Saints ‘cos I don’t like thru pins, I reckon you get better grip from grub screws.

I don’t think you can wrong with eitehr the Nanos or the Saints tbh. Nanos come in pretty colours and are a bit cheaper? I’ve had two sets of Nanos – 1st pair lasted 3 years without missing a beat.

MG1s are soft as sh*t, and when the pins come out they take the threads with them. If you’re looking for something light, grippy and long-lasting, Superstar Ultra Mag are a way better equivalent IMO.

Magnesium nanos are the worst pedals I’ve ever used for dropping pins tbh, far worse than my MG1s. I tolerate it because they’re great pedals in other ways though.

Interesting – mine have been great, despite plenty of pedal smashes over the course of a couple of years. Think I’m one pin down in each pedal.

I have been an MG1 fan for years. I did try some wah wah’s on my ht but now have gone back to wellgo’s on both ht and fs.

Been riding the Saints for a while now and think they are excellent.

Plus they are sensibly priced and I’m expecting the usual Shimano reliability.

thats mad. Cheaper than the DX (new model of saint pedal out?). Hmmm…….

Wah Wahs were amazing, I’m now on Vaults to coordinate better with the build and the grip is…different. Very grippy but feel like there’s a sweet spot, the Wah Wahs feel less concave and therefore less particular about how your foot is placed.

MG1 are ok, not great.

I think thru-pin pedals are a no-brainer, why wouldn’t you? The Saints look cool especially given the Ribble deal.

Superstar Nanos, got a set for my new bike. There fantastic! best pedals I’ve ever come accross.

I’ve got Wah Wahs (same pedal as Superstar Nano and many others) on one bike and I prefer the more concave shape of my Easton Flatboys. You can also feel the axle bulge in the body

which I think interferes slightly with how well the pedal grips (not saying they lack grip, only that they could be better).

If I was in the market for flatties now and had 40 quid to spend for me it’d be a no brainer and I’d get the Saints at Ribble. May just get some for the spares box at that price…

I think thru-pin pedals are a no-brainer, why wouldn’t you?

Weeelll… Grub screws can give more grip, they’re effectively all “edge” so dig into some shoes better. And the advantages of thru-pins aren’t all that clearcut, ime once the pin’s damaged enough that I want it out, it’s too damaged to thread back out anyway- need to cut the top off.

Some folks reckon that thrus are inherently weaker- you’ve got a bigger hole in the cage basically. Not sure if that matters.

I bought some Nano Tech flats after recommendations on here – what a pedal, loads of grip and decent sized platform #bargain

DMR Vaults. Forget about cost, you’ll be on these a lot. Got them on both my bikes. Lot’s of people using them on DH uplifts and at races. Brendan Fairclough has abandoned Bugrtec for these!

Been trying to get a bushing or service kit for my straitlines, but to no avail, so just got some Nano’s bargain compared to other pedals, will see how they last through the autumn and winter, they are light and felt quite smooth, first ride out plenty of grip so all good, so far…. and a packet of tangfastic with the pedals lovely 🙂

I like the look of the vaults, a friend has just got a pair and they are lovely. However despite being thinner than his old pedals (DX) the extra width means he catches them a lot more in uphill rocky sections.

I had my eye on some of the new saints and at £36 I’m not sure I can pass them up!! I do love shimano’s axle design, really easy to maintain and seems pretty bombproof.

wellgo mg1’s are pretty good in my experience, light and cheap. Mine did fail catastrophically the other day (after 2 years service) leaving me with just a spindle to pedal home on, but to be fair to the pedal it had been making warning noises for a couple of rides.

I’ve replaced them with nukeproof electrons which are slightly lighter, but dont offer the same level of grip. So my vote would go for the MG1’s.

Yes out of stock, I don’t use CRC since the credit card incident so use LBS or other suppliers that can get them from Hotlines.

Thought appreciate the irony that Hotlines is owned by CRC, but at least someone else gets the resale margin

I was nearly sucked into the low-profile-pedal-snake-oil but went for DMR Vaults which I think are great. The big platform is brilliant despite the odd ground hit, and the bearings seem to be good quality. Ed-the-beard did a u-tube thing on how to service them which will be handy one day 😆

How much are the Hopes going to be?

Oh and what’s the score on those plastic nukeproof jobbies? Any advantages?

Saints are 8.5mm thinner than the mx30, which is a big advantage, not sure on actual thickness though.

The plastic Nukeproof Electron pedals would have been ideal, however they dont appear to have enough pins so I believe are less grippy than the Proton and Neutron (Nano) models.

Any idea how the saint thickness compares to a nano? I’m happy to go thinner, but thicker would seem backwards to me.

My MX30s are 23mm at the thin point (concave pedal) on the outside edge. They’re concave in two dimensions though, so may be a bit thinner at the actual centre point.

FWIW, I like the double concave profile of them as it holds the foot nicely, and rate that more than absolute thinness. If the saints have a similar profile (and reliability) then they sound perfect.
Especially at £36 !
