I’ve a Stooge Dirt Tracker with a 150mm dropper currently installed on it and I quite fancy upgrading to a Fox Transfer. I’ve worked out that I can fit the 175mm version, slammed, in the seat tube, which should put me at the ideal saddle height and give me 25mm more drop. I don’t need this extra drop but I do like the look.

My question is, are there any negatives to getting the absolute longest dropper possible? The only thing I can think of is if I ever change the frame as I would likely need a shorter dropper, I say this as the Dirt Tracker has a relatively short seat tube compared to similar size rigid steel frames. In which case a 150mm would be better for transferability….

    Anything else I’m missing?

I’d always go for the most drop I could get BUT if it really is that tight you could be in trouble if you are a few mm out or should you change shoes/saddle/pedals or should you move the eccentric bb which I think Stooges have.  Does the transfer have any adjustment like some droppers do?

Keep the 150mm post in case you ever buy a frame the 175mm post won’t fit in? Or just go for a OneUp mk2… or similar, where you can adapt the post to reduce it, if you ever need to.

Buy something with adjustable travel, like a one-up

I like the One-up droppers, I’ve actually been considering one for my full squisher due to the low stack of them, but I’m really keen on the Factory Transfer post for my rigid bike mostly because of the Kashima, I’m a sucker for that coating.

The point made about the EBB is a good one and not one I’d considered, there’s easily a good few mm to play with there should it be slightly too long.

Yep, I was given a BikeYoke dropper that was just a few mm too long for my FlareMax. It was close enough that a lower-stack saddle, shorter cranks and the marginally shorter v3 BikeYoke seat-clamp sorted it out, but a very slightly too long seatpost – rideable but not optimal – wasn’t great. I’d be very sure that the 175mm drop post is actually going to work in real life and if in doubt, and particularly if you don’t need the drop,

As above, the One Up post allows you to shorten the travel by 10 or 20mm using parts supplied.

I hadn’t realised there was such variance between saddles until recently. The Fizik that came on my new bike is 1cm taller than my Ergon one.
