After a discussion and an email today, i went bonkers and bought this.
specialized-status-160-2021-enduro-all-mountain-93720-52-93720-53-3-38259 by Steve Weeks[/url], on Flickr
I’ve been debating one for a while, so thought “why not”…..
I fancied trying the mullet thing, along with wanting a Specialized and loved the shape, colour and geometry of the Status…. So why not.. what’s the worst that can happen lol. I used the chat online on Rutland and was met with “we only have 1 left in that size, it’s in the MK store”… If you want it now i can lower the price a bit..
I replied with “can you throw in a set of pedals too?” he said yes and that was that..Arrives Tues next week.

I generally don’t keep things though, so, we’ll see.
v7fmpFull MemberNice!
I had the 160mm version for 6 months or so (was a fill in bike whilst waiting for a warranty replacement on my Norco Optic). I really enjoyed it. Did various rides on it, Innerleithan/Golfie, southern enduro milland, BPW, local bimbles and i even did the SDW on it.
If i ever needed a park bike, i wouldnt hesitate to buy one again.
Is there a reason you went with the 140mm version? I guess the 160mm would be too similar to the Whyte?
A little heavy, but a solid bit of kit. Enjoy!
weeksyFull MemberNice. Will you be riding it on Sunday?
Fraid not, doesn’t arrive till Tues and wasn’t able to collect in store..

TBH i think at times on the G170 i’m a little in the ‘overbiked’ sort of thing and was thinking i can still get down the stuff i need on the shorter travel bike but with the hope of it being a little faster on the non-bonkers stuff. The weight, yeah i get you, but there’s a budget i’m comfortable with and due to lack of stock my options were slightly limited on what i could or couldn’t find. I did dabble in my brain with the Whyte T140, but i have to say i really like the looks of the Status and not the T140. A TREK remedy would have been hard in the debate too but finding one wasn’t as simple.
v7fmpFull Memberfair play mate.
I reckon the 140 will be a ripper. a bit more nimble maybe than the 160mm and enough travel to keep things interesting.
I found the mullet/short rear end great for getting round tight switchbacks etc.
Dang…. makes me want another one now!
mashrFull MemberKeep the G170 for race, uplift and Alps duties? I did something similar when I got a lucky deal on a 29er hardtail. It’s used for tamer stuff with the bigger bike brought out for the bigger trails. Suppose you’ll find out in a ride or 2 if the 170 will still be required though

I can’t think of any real reason to sell the G170 at the moment, so for Alps i may well take both, just in case we break one. My lad can at a push ride or indeed race the G170 in terms of sizing now, although it would be a bit big for him, he’d still cope well enough to get a result.
kimbersFull MemberNice, but expect to be replacing that SRAM NX tat rapidly
I’d either sell it straight away and replace with Deore or better or wait until you have to warranty it and do it thenweeksyFull MemberNice, but expect to be replacing that SRAM NX tat rapidly
I’d either sell it straight away and replace with Deore or better or wait until you have to warranty it and do it thenYeah there’s that and there’s the DUB cranks/BB… we’ll see how things last and i’ll make some decisions over time. As with all bikes, they evolve, change, modify, so it’s no biggy.
kimbersFull MemberStill reckon it’ll be an awesome bike, just think NX isn’t up to the abuse the rest of it is built for
weeksyFull MemberThank you… just got to wait until next Tues now…. well, maybe actually next Fri as i need to fit the invisiframe kit before taking it out.
OllyFree MemberLovely. Current specializeds look very clean.
Cant decide if having different sized wheels would annoy me, as i tend to put the front on the back and replace the front.
The theoretical advantages are solid though.mashrFull MemberI’d be very tempted to send the Invisiframe kit to Rutland and pay them to fit it, make new bike day even nicer when all you have to do is set it up and ride
weeksyFull MemberNAh, Mrs Weeksy will enjoy that
🙂
In honesty, it arrives on Tues next week and she’s away Tues and Wed with the boy for half term, so i’ll have 48 hours at home alone to wangle it about and fit it over a few beers and a bit of music.
weeksyFull MemberCant decide if having different sized wheels would annoy me, as i tend to put the front on the back and replace the front.
The theoretical advantages are solid though.I’ve been very 29er curious in recent months and even considered swapping the wheels on the G-170 to 29er for some testing, but i don’t think the front had clearance, so shelved it as a plan. It’ll be going to FoD and BPW etc for back to back testing with the G-170 which will give me more of an indication whether i’ll run it 100% of the time or keep the G-170 for the big days. I’m expecting i’ll run this on 100% though if it rides how i hope it does.
joebristolFull MemberGood purchase that I reckon @weeksy 👌
If they sold it frame only I would have been seriously considering the status 140 to replace the Bird Aether 7. But only full builds – I did check with Certini.
I think the Status will be more capable than the g170 tbh – it’s a much better shape frame and got decent geometry. When I had a quick go back to back between my sentinel and your g170 I’d say I felt ‘in’ my bike but on top of the g170.
On the NX front I’d run it until the rear mech expires and just replace it with a GX one or Shimano XT. The cassette is heavy but solid and a decent 11-50 range. I don’t think there’s too much wrong with the NX shifter.
ayjaydoubleyouFull Memberas i need to fit the invisiframe kit before taking it out.
its a beefy workhorse alloy bike, let it wear its scars with pride.
I’d be taking the full NX off unused and selling if its going to be your everyday bike that gets some milage. If it was a park/uplift/pushup/messabout bike only I wouldnt be so concerned.
Maybe even swap it to the whyte if that is going to become your “DH” bike.

The G-170 has 175mm cranks and the Status has 170mm which ideally i’d like to run. So i won’t bother swapping bits off it at the moment
joebristolFull MemberWith the fun stuff I’ve had one bb so far on my hardtail. It hasn’t listed brilliantly well – less than a year later and I’ve got a wheels manufacturing dub one to try that cost more than I’d have liked. Will see how that goes.
That said my Bird Aeris 145LT had an NX crank with dub bb and that was flying along fine for over a year and then went on my nephew’s bike and it’s still going.
So maybe it’s a bit pot luck on bb alignment / facing etc 🤷♂️
hairyscaryFull MemberI’ve got the 160 version.
The NX stuff went as soon as I got a SRAM freehub from Specialized. Went for 165mm cranks.
The bars went shortly afterwards….I bent then round my thigh 🙄.
The rims were a bit soft as well.
The shock just didn’t work for me, I could not get it set up well, so went all in and bought an EXT Storia.
It is awful on anything flat or traversy, weighs a metric tonne but is ace on anything pointing down.weeksyFull MemberLOL great sale pitch mate 🙂
I’m guessing the 140 can’t pedal worse than the G170… but time will find out that answer of course.

NX is defo use until it breaks – it works for a lot of people for a while. It’s not as bad as SX with the plastic mech that just snaps off.
Bars – assume it’s just an alloy bar – how do you mean you bent it round your thigh?
I’ve got a float x performance elite on my sentinel and I think it’s pretty good now I’ve got back used to an air shock. It does have a lsc adjustment dial that the one on the status hasn’t though.
fazziniFull MemberNice looking bicycle there @weeksy. I do love a good Spesh and this one is very pleasing on the eye. Quite like the green version too.
zerocoolFull MemberWe’ll done. NBD is my favourite day and if I was looking for a new bike that would be on my list.
You should have no problems fitting the Invisframe to a new bike. It’s dead simple. You’d have to be fairly hamfisted to coconut up.
Enjoy blasting it around.
eddiebabyFree MemberNDB?
Seriously though that looks excellent. Had my mob nicked a couple of weeks back so looking for something now and that could fit the bill.
readyFull MemberVery Nice!
Had half an eye on one of these too, so would be very interested in your thoughts after a few weeks of riding please!
joebristolFull MemberIf anyone is looking for one the Specialized Concept store in Bristol had a few Status’ on display on the weekend just gone. Not sure if they were 140s or 160s though. Seemed to have a lot of stock in there – some stump jumpers / stumpie Evo’s etc too.
weeksyFull MemberMmmmm… Stumpy…. Mmmmm
Must resist
I considered a Stumpy, they had a very powder blue version about, but the price of the status and the spec made it more ‘right’ for my budget really.
hairyscaryFull MemberI think I kinda focused on the stuff I didn’t like about the 160 😳😳.
I’m sure that the 140 will work better as an all-round bike.I’m still getting personal bests on some climbs so it can obviously go up a hill.
I used to be more of a plower on a bike but this one has encouraged me to hop and jump stuff. It is a lot of fun to ride when it is pointing down.dangeourbrainFree MemberAm I the only person wondering what pedals?
Also NDB clearly meant “Next Tuesday Brings” but your acronym generator is set to German.
P-JayFree MemberThat’s a lovely looking bike, nicer to my eyes than the Enduro / Stumpjumper.
It’s a part-time job keeping up with Spesh models, Statuses or Statui? used to be DH bikes that were cheaper than Demos, but now they’re Enduro (the niche) / Trail bikes that are cheaper than Enduro (the model) / Stumpjumper like the old 26″ Pitch FS bike. the Pitch HT replaced the Rockhopper as the entry level HT, but now they’re Rockhoppers again,
joebristolFull MemberA mate has that baby blue carbon stumpie Evo. It’s nice. Similar spec I think to the status in terms of shock and fork but maybe a better drivetrain / lighter frame. Showed him a clean pair of wheels on my alloy Sentinel up and down hills though 😎
