Mud tyre?

Ok, so I’m looking for a mud tyre for my 650b Bird. I’ve always had Specialised Storm controls, but spesh don’t make a 650b size storm.
So any other recommendations in 650b size? Thanks

If the new Continental Baron really is just as good as the old one but with better side walls and a bigger size…….them.

Watch out though, they are pricey and might be crap/have equally useless sidewalls.

Did have a Baron on my old Orange five a couple of years ago. Was quite impressed with it, but as you say, they are expensive.

Shorty or the new Baron if it lives up to the hype.

Specialized website lists the Storm Control in 650.

It’s a specific downhill version though

I’ve actually just found a storm 650b in Evans. Been looking for months. No one stocked them.

Shorty is a bit more spiky, less allroundy than a Baron but similiarly good.

Now I’m confused as Mbr 4 days ago said in their storm control review that there is not a 650b version yet, but Evans have this.

Widge – Shorty is great round here. Storms are good too, but Shorty has a bit more girth. Put my Shortys back on last week.

Do you run Shortys front and back Rick?

Michelin Wild Mud Advanced? Better than the Spesh Storm Controls in my opinion. CRC have them for £42.

What do you lot reckon to the Schwalbe Magic Mary super gravity?

Shorty would be a lot of tyre on the back tbh. I only own one so I’ve not tried it but it’d be for really bad conditions, enduro racing in a swamp sort of thing. And even then maybe not.

I’ve only used the normal magic mary trailstar, imo the rubber’s basically too hard for that sort of tyre, it’s spiky but it’s not really that grippy. But with SG you get the option of the vertstar rubber which might fix that. 3C shorty craps on the trailstar mary though.

Is the Bird going to get dirty then widge? I’ll be running magic Marys in trailstar, they work for me. I haven’t tried the shorty yet though to compare.

I swap around a bit so at present I have a Minion on the front and an Ardent on the rear, when the trails get muddy, as opposed to their current damp status, I’ll go Minion on the rear and Shorty up front. If it’s a really wet winter I’ll run Shorty front and rear.

Shorty is excellent on the front if it’s muddy but quite draggy on the rear so it needs to be very muddy to have it on the rear.

I leave near Winchester and the ground has a lot of clay in it so when it’s really muddy it’s the thick clingy stuff so it needs an aggressive tread.

Haven’t used the 650b version but the butcher is a ridiculously good rear tyre. Not too slow, good size, good grip and when it slides it slides beautifully. DHR2 is quite similiar but a bit more full-on

I’ve been using a DHR2 with the Shorty up front. Work really well together IMO. Not running the Shorty on the front yet but I am looking forward to putting it back on.
