    Hi all

My wife has been suffering periodically from mouth ulcers since she was a child. She has been checked out multiple times and there is no known cause although likely to be immune system related.

Over the last few years she’s been managing the pain with Iglu mouth ulcer gel. It’s worked really well and saved a lot of sleepless nights. Other things like bonjela just don’t compare. Recently though it seems to be out of stock and it’s not clear when it will be manufactured again.

Any mouth uLcer sufferers out there?
Have you seen Iglu gel in any shops?
Is there an alternative out there?

Mouth ulcers are the worst. An absolute misery. Can’t help with the Iglu situation but your wife certainly has my sympathy.  I used to suffer terribly with them as a child, then, nothing – ulcer free until late thirties when I was in a relationship with an ex girlfriend. All of a sudden started getting them again. And yes, Iglu was a godsend. I stopped seeing the ex and the ulcers disappeared again…

It’s just annoying that nobody seems to know what causes them and thus, how to prevent them. Are they caused by stress, anxiety? Bad diet? A specific ingredient? Smoking? Drugs? I can’t remember doing the last two as a child though… I’ve asked doctors and dentists, nobody knows!

Whitening toothpaste give me ulcers fairly quickly.

Yes. I used to get a steroid paste like iglu. It sorted the swelling and left a coating over the area which protected it overnight. It was very effective.
You can’t get it in the uk anymore but there is a similar product available via the interweb.
There was a STW thread about this a while back.

Iglu made my mouth feel awful and in some cases made my ulcers worse. Bonjela does fine for day to day ulcers but for really bad ones Orajel is best – it’s sold for dentures but in the US all ulcer medicine is benzocaine based and that’s what Orajel is. It’s really effective. It’s the only thing I can use on wounds I get due to a partially erupted wisdom tooth.

The paint on Bonjela is also good for bad ones and helps them heal faster.

Unhelpful but gives the names of the replacement available in other countries.

All the other stuff just deals with pain relief not reducing the swelling ime.

The steroid paste recommended above is the biz. It is sometimes available from New Zealand so have a Google.

Closer to home, Peroxyl mouthwash is pretty good. Often disappears from the shelves for months at a time but we recently ordered some over the Web from Boots

My son suffered really badly due to Ulcerative Colitis, at his lowest he had 50 mouth ulcers at one time. He was given some steroid paste to get rid of them but he takes turmeric tablets every day now and he swears they keep the ulcers at bay.

Thanks all for input. Cogglepin – I feel for your son, sounds like a tough bout.

I’ll pass on some of these recommendations

I used to get a steroid paste like iglu.

I’m pretty sure Iglu is just Lidocain and paraffin wax isn’t it?

    NHS gives these options https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/lidocaine-for-mouth-and-throat/

Calgel looks like a good shout

If anyone here goes through a lot of Corsodyl mouthwash at nearly a fiver a (300ml) bottle, it’s handy to know Poundland has an equivalent (200ml) HealthPoint brand for a quid. My gums are pretty bad and my dentist has me blasting the worst bits with this stuff in a Waterpick.

I rate anbesol – stings to apply but essentially creates a protective skin over the ulcer:

I’m a long term ulcer sufferer. I used Adcortyl until it disappeared and then Iglu. If that’s gone too that’s a bummer. Another good one was a Boots own brand in a sort of pencil applicator – can’t remember the name – the tube is white, if that helps…

Also … wasn’t there a thread on here that said that the active ingredient in Difflam sore throat stuff was the same as in Iglu? Or have I made that up?

I used to suffer badly with mouth ulcers and found anbersol the best to relieve the pain. I rarely get them now as I avoid any toothpaste with sodium lauryl sulfate in which is the cheap foaming agent in 99% of toothpaste which was suggested on a mouth ulcer thread I stumbled across years ago.
Some sensodyne and other brands don’t contain the nasty stuff

Iglu still do a denture pain relief gel. Its description seems almost the same, so I bought some to find out.

Difflam mouthwash is about the best thing you can buy over the counter now the adcortyl in or abase is unavailable

I used to suffer and switching to a gluten free diet has meant I haven’t had any in years. Anecdotal, I’m aware but it might help?

    Hi schmiken

That’s interesting- she’s actually recently gone gluten free and it’s certainly reduced the frequency but still getting them on a regular basis with some times worse than others

She’s bought some Iglu denture/braces gel to see if it helps. She’s tried a few of those suggested but Iglu was her go to. I’ll no doubt be wandering isolated chemists to see if anyone has some old stock knocking about

I used to suffer terribly with mouth ulcers – my mouth is properly scarred.

They used to prescribe Oracort in the UK but stopped a few years ago in favour of the steroid mouthwash. I continued to buy Oracort from an online New Zealand pharmacy. It’s the only thing that would stay in place and fix them.

However, you are just masking a symptom…..

I asked the doctor for a coeliac blood test as ulcers are one of the symptoms. They weren’t confident as I had no bowel symptoms.

It came back positive. So I went 100% gluten free (and was much better).

They also biopsied my ulcers and found granuloma indicative of crohns.

However I still had bad times with ulcers and fatigue. They put cameras in every orifice.

Anyway I have ended up on azithioprine and am much much much better.

Iglu Denture stuff arrived today. It IS the same stuff.

Iglu denture stuff also arrived at this end. It’s the same consistency but without the lidocaine and antiseptic

Anyway it’s been tried with positive results. It would appear just having the physical barrier (without the lidocaine) works just as well. The real test will be overnight. She’s already bought another 6 tubes 👍

    Thanks for all comments

Tbh, its the physical barrier I value it for. Really seems to give the lesion a chance to start healing.
