Now, then, hear me out! If you don’t like Marmite then this isn’t the thread for you, but just try it – toasted bread of your choice, butter of your choice then a layer of Marmite with a nice tangy layer of marmalade on top, delicious. This can also be eaten cold for trailside sandwiches…

Also on the sweet and sour theme, fry halved bananas in a hot pan and before they go mushy drop Lea and Perrins, soy sauce and some brown sauce in the pan. You should be rewarded with a lot of spitting and sometimes a pan fire whilst it all caramelises. Put it between some bread and you have a quick, delicious and nutritious meal.

Mint sauce on a bacon sandwich

Interesting idea; might try that. I’ve been a devotee of marmalade on a bacon buttie or bacon-and-toast ever since I was a nipper

Hmm. I love both marmalade, and marmite, most frequent brekky is first slice of toast with marmite, then slices 2&3 with marmalade. But, I’m not sure I’d try them together.

As a kid, I ate marmite and salad cream sandwiches.

Peanut butter and mayonnaise, with sliced tomato, salt and pepper, is good too.

Plain digestive and marmite is good

But not as good as ginger nuts and cheese

Or sweet chilli sauce on plan chocolate digestives

Or Philadelphia on plain chocolate ginger nuts

But the favourite is spruce tip syrup on pancakes. A weird sweet taste of Forest and mountain

Amazing, I was musing on just this combination just a few days ago and decided against it! And I eat all sorts of weird combination sandwiches.

Maybe I’ll have to try it after all…

    Some of my favourites:

    Peanut butter*, marmite & cheese.

Peanut butter, banana (mashed or sliced) & cheese.

    Cream cheese and marmalade.

*Whole Earth crunchy, the One True Peanut Butter. Though any will do in a pinch.

Since it’s Christmas you can have this one for nothing – sprouts and horseradish (works with cabage too)

I have a mate who became addicted to eating coronation chicken using Bourbon biscuits as you’d use a naan.  He’s off it now but had to substitute in crystal meth to do it

Graeme Obree was a big fan of marmalade and marmite sandwiches – they are super tasty and no one will steal them.  For an upgrade try cream cheese, marmite and marmalade as a pancake filling.

To qualify my earlier statement (not that it really needs it), many a day has been ruined as an unsuspecting maker of Marmite on toast by a speckle of jam on the breadboard. That slightest trace of sweet contaminant utterly ruins a Marmite sandwich.

I have been combining marmite and marmalde for nearly half a centuary now but was always too afraid to talk about it as it’s a bit wierd. Thanks WOF1 for giving me the strength to come out.

It is truly a composite taste, greater than the sum of it’s parts.

My sandwich of choice for long rides is as follows:

    Wholemeal, seeded bread

    Butter

    Marmite

    Peanut butter

    Marmalade

    Sliced banana

    Sliced, boiled egg

    Amazing!!

OP is on the right track but needs to push the boat out a bit more..

@funkrodent I was half way through dinner stopped and pulled a face reading that description, all it’s missing is some gherkin, to be complete, surely?

Those Graze Crunch Marmite snacks are rather yummy.

Cheese and jam on toast.  Personal favourite is Strawberry Jam & Cheddar.

Cheese with Christmas cake.  Gotta be a crumbly one like Wensleydale.

I think you got that the wrong way round.

Thick cut marmalade is excellent on a bacon sarnie for the bitter, sweet and salty sensation

About half a century ago I was in a sandwich shop in Sheffield when a bloke ordered “ham, jam, onion and mustard”. Pretty adventurous in those days.

You could be onto something there 😉

Egg is, I suppose, optional. But the rest gives you protein, vitamins, lots of carbs, minerals etc etc. Pretty much ticks the boxes from a fuelling and recovery point of view. Tastes great too!

As it’s the season – Mince Pie and Coleslaw.

Sweet and creamy deliciousness. The few I’ve shared this with have agreed…

    Next question though: what marmalade?

I like thick cut and dark with good chunks, something like Cooper’s Oxford or Mackays Dundee. Apparently it’s a class thing if you like it thick or thin? *shrug*

Recently tried Rose’s lemon & lime, simply because it’s green and looked fun. Not what I was expecting! Really sweet, tastes like someone mixed a handful of Haribo into a cup of Sprite and left it to set. The kids love it and they all hate marmalade. Probably because This Is Not Real Marmalade.

Peanut butter and cheese. Peanut butter and banana.

Marmalade is La Vieja Fabrica from Seville oranges.

Breakfast in the motorhome today with our grandson (2 1/2), he had two squares of toast of marmite and two of marmalade. “Look Papa” he said, “I’ve made a sandwich”. Excellent, third generation of marmite/marmalade lovers is on it’s way! I’d like to stress that there was no coercion, pressure or subliminal thought processes applied, it was pure evolution!

Tried this for lunch today. Weird, but nice. Salty marmalade? Seems wrong. I approve.

Second sandwich was cream cheese and marmalade, with a slice of cheddar thrown in there as well. Also much approved.

I’ve just caught up with this thread after not seeing it for a couple of days, and am now drooling. There are some properly good ideas in here. Mince pies and coleslaw is going to take some beating.

This is simple but a taste sensation.

    Ingredients

1x salt & vinegar square crisp

1x red midget gem (mini gem for those woke types)

    Method

Place midget gem on top of square crisp.

Put in mouth and experience this unique flavour combo.
