How did the fracking vote get turned into a vote of no confidence?

The government intended to lift the ban on fracking without a debate or vote in the House of Commons, claiming that as the government it was solely their responsibility.

The Labour Party tabled a motion which said that it must be debated and voted on by parliament.

It wasn’t a vote on whether to allow or ban fracking only to debate and vote on it.

The government claimed that it amounted to a vote of confidence in the government.

    Climate change is real.

Real or not this is not the time to deal with that.

However, it will be very funny if Starmer stars banging on climate change …

As far as I can tell Labour are saying the Tories did it, and the Tories are saying it was Labour. Does anyone know the answer?

Labour decided to put in a opposition motion for a bill to rule out fracking. Probably just for a laugh/put some pressure on the tories who are rather split on the subject.
The tories then decided to turn it, effectively, into a vote of confidence by imposing the three line whip.
God knows why at this stage since it was only the vote on whether to have a proper put through so plenty of time to mess around and/or impose the whip when it came to the final bill.
So Labour responsible for the vote occurring but the tories responsible for it becoming such an important vote.

James O’brien last night was speculating we might be just one or two Conservative leaders away from actually admitting brexit is the problem.

Depends how fast they turn them around! We’re probably 8-10 years away from that… whereas we might have two more Conservative leaders before the next election.

All weak leaders will blame someone or something…

You blamed Brexit further up the thread. Anyway, I’d better stop feeding the troll.

Brexit was ’caused’ by austerity and low growth.

It’s lead to austerity and lowe growth.

So the solution to reversing austerity and low growth is ……..

See, this is the beauty of Conservative rule… it can persuade us, with the help of the media… that “they’re all the same”… and opposition politicians get tainted with all the failures of the Tories being in power. Time to kick them out and give others a try.

Quick! Jacob Rees Mogg! Now’s your chance… 8-0

I would love to see him given the job voted in ,then destroyed in the same way as Truss, but I fear him and his millions of pounds couldn’t give a toss.
Meanwhile the world looks on in bemusement at the UK Gov soap opera.
I hope they have checked the Westminster basement for any stored fireworks.

Looks like it’ll be those three… they should probably shuffle it up if they want to keep their party members on side though. Sunak as PM is less of a unifying proposal than having him back as Chancellor and Mordaunt as PM. Hunt to FCO or HO. No way he’s going to be PM… that’s why he’s got the “bridging” role he has now.

It should be obvious by now. There will be no party member vote. Mordaunt and Sunak, and one will step down before the vote. See May. Rishi will be the next PM.

So now we’ll have the wonderful situation of no action take against those who didn’t vote no yesterday and those who did getting hammered in the polls if there is an election.  It’s difficult to imagine how you could screw things up more

and, I wish someone had slapped that smug look before she went.  Just for the smugness, nothing else

So, we’ve got to go through this leadership debacle again, weeks of each other slagging each other off, then some other nobber getting in. Fab.

Unless of course Labour is going to create new “energy” from thin air

That’s the plan, lift the ban on onshore wind farms and ramp up solar generation.

Brexit was and is a symptom and not the cause.

No Brexit really is the cause of a lot of our problems, increased trade tariffs, loss of a committed workforce, increasing racial intolerance, lower investment in the UK. The vehicle of small minded xenophobic and blinkered people on the right and the left.

Whoop she’s gone. My wife had a go at me last night for following all this too closely, especially as I did the same with Johnson’s exit. She rather forcefully reminded me to be careful what I wished for, but it can’t actually get any worse can it, of course it can.

Only this time it’ll (mainly) be behind closed doors with little public interaction.

Guessing that sunak/mordor/hunt combo was set even before hunt arrived as chancellor, it was fairly obvious especially when Shapps rocked up too.

As said above, no need for the pesky members to be involved if all but one of the candidates takes a step back nefore the ‘voting’ starts.

The time to deal with the climate disaster was 50+ years ago.

    The best time, yes.

But the currently available best time is RIGHT NOW.
And not in 2 years time.
We need a general election NOW.
The Tories need to drop their IEA pro-fossil fuel nonsense completely in the next week if they want to survive that election and stay a major force in UK politics.

None of them capable of uniting the party and coming up with any answers to the energy crisis, cost of living crisis and the overall task of righting the rudderless ship HMS Great Britain as it founders on the rocks.

This country is absolutely **** for a generation now.

Crazy-legs, you underestimate the tories. Sure, they won’t give a stuff about us plebs, climate etc but if they can see the gravy train is ending I’ll bet they bite their lips and put on a united face to save their own skins for the next two years and asset strip as much as they can before they can’t avoid the GE

I mean, I’d love to see the tories implode with infighting as much as the next one but horrible feeling that experiment is over. Sunk will likely improve the polls slightly and they’ll all fall in line behind him publicly
