“and this part of the lane is dangerous for cyclists….” says the 80 year old former teacher turned activist as she stands on a flat and wide green lane. Dear lord, I do love the BBC. Shaping up to be an interesting programme!

Joyce is a great person and a cracking teacher, at least she is doing something unlike many!!

    “Destroy our lives”?
    “Can’t collect our sloes”

Not the best of arguments. All it takes is flexibility.

pook – the main issues i see (as someone who lives in spitting distance) is the lack of respect for locals, the pollution, and the fat bastards that do it due to being so fat that they cannot cycle

This has great potential to wind me up. I can see where they’re (the locals) are coming from, as someone who lives on the edge of the Peak but the way they appear to be going about it seems a bit off to me.

Lack of respect goes both ways though. I’d love to have a crack at green laning, but I’d do it with the same consideration as I do MTBing.

While I’m sure that the residents of GL have a point, they aren’t really showing it effectively now.

Nor are the green laners to be fair though.

Also: is there a danger that this programme will simply highlight Chirpit Lane as somewhere to go green laning?

NIMBYism at it’s worst. Slows indeed.
The locals bought land next to a BOAT and now they dislike it being a BOAT.
They’ll start with the greenlaners, then the MXers and then they’ll go after us.

Anyway – talking about this green lane… is it a decent fast drop? Looks like it could be ridden at light speed 😉

I’ve done it on the CX a couple of times.
Didn’t see any 4×4’s or BBC film crews though.

Seems to me that mountain bikers would be well advised to join groups like the green lane alliance (or what ever they want to call it) and let the Ramblers Association fight for the rights of their mountain biking wing. Seems like a no lose approach for the likes of us.

    Thoughts?

Alternate use times? Ok that as a proposal isn’t always workable but hey live & let live maybe?..

certainly a lot of NIMBYISM. asking those crossers to slow down when they were already going slow enough is just asking for conflict.

‘and let the Ramblers Association fight for the rights of their mountain biking wing. Seems like a no lose approach for the likes of us. Thoughts? ‘

Cracking idea mate, we can go for the 2.5% of all paths in England and Wales that vehicles legally use (*that we already have access to anyway). After all we (mtbers get a whole 22% ish), the ramblers only get 100%+ (yes 100%+ – all tracks, plus open access, plus oncoming coastal path etc).

    This.

They won’t stop untill all that’s allowed are horseriders and walkers.

Appears to be a massive overreaction from some of them, with a huge lack of rational thinking. “I know people who wont come to the Peak District because of the motorbikes.” The Peak District is huge, with loads of footpaths, not just BOATs.

I’ve always wondered what the attraction of driving into a national park and just sitting in theirs….

    It’s chips…..and sarsons vinegar!

It’s all so clear now 😯

It’s a bloody awful film though, meandering and wishy washy. They’re trying to base it around personalities rather than issues and the background music is properly awful in a 1950s B-movie way. It’s as if the people making the film have no interest in or understanding of what’s going on. It’s total bobbins. The real issue is that our entire rights of way system is an absurd, anachronistic farce where rights of way have nothing to do with fitness for use. Rubbish.

Won’t they be too busy not banning 4x4s to bother with us? 🙂

yeah, I don’t think that doc put the campaigners in a good light – just moany middle aged/OAP idealist nimbyists. the PDNP have been good on the whole by not banning outright but imposing sanctions, compromising.

Id be pleased with an outright ban for all motors, since the current way of dealing with the erosion is to completely flatten the paths making it rubbish for riding anyway.. Chapel gate was a top descent and now its flat, they showed the work done on roych clough to flatten it and it’s only a matter of time before the other side of roych clough gets done the same as it gets more and more destroyed by 4x4s

Well, of course, if we had a credible organisation to represent us, we would have nothing to fear. 😉

the PDNP (and other NPA’s) use a massive sledge hammer to crack a nut in their rampant path building/restoration:

    example

I’m no fan of offroad MX / 4×4 – Unfortunately I’ve seen a sizable minority of ocurrences of dangerous / insensitive driving amongst them…However…

I thought the GReen Lane Alliance NIMBYs came across far worse in the film – as commented above they were just asking for confrontation on their local lane – the MXers weren’t doing anything wrong at all in the case on film.

I can see the point of their arguments where MX/4×4 access is affecting people’s day-to-day lives through local noise pollution etc., but to conclude that the only way to resolve this is to ban all vehicles from the park is just plain spiteful and selfish.

I also thought the park authority came across well, standing by their policies and not allowing themselves to be bullied by a vocal minority.

Dare I suggest that the locals feel intimidated? With all due respect to them, most are elderly coupled possibly with poor hearing and slow reactions. The same reasons why some do not like us.
