Landscaping advice (low retaining wall)

Any expert or armchair expert advice on this? I dug out a rockery and built a wall. I’m not planning to put anything behind as the rocks are massive and it’s quite low. Is this a bad idea?

Looks fine. I’ve recently built a sandstone wall approx. 4x height of yours in to a steep slope, yours will be fine

I’m no expert (*) but we did the same almost 20 years ago and nothing has ever moved (touching wood here). Yours looks like a fairly shallow slope and you’re not putting tonnes and tonnes of earth behind it. We slid the upper rows back slightly so the wall wasn’t vertical.
(*) an expert will be along shortly to pour scorn on the above.

Put a waterproof membrane on the inside of the wall before you backfill it. Otherwise it will be permanently damp and moss covered.

Or poke some alpines into the gaps and make a feature of it.

Bit of lean back into the bank, keep the joints bridged, odd deep stone going right back into back to tie it, backfill and tamp as you go, stone packing to stabilise rocks (but not on the front face), save some big stuff for capping the top.

Put some larger stones on top or restrain them in some manner otherwise they’ll constantly be falling off or moving.
