Not keen so far. Looks like they’re trying to give it curves. Curves are the enemy of big boots (But not big but[Steady now! Mods].

Must have been one last niche in the bellend market left to fill. Maybe the new Defender will be designed to fill the more rugged, non-‘sporting’ brief.

Rear end sort of ruins the look for me (Volvoesque) otherwise I quite like it. Not that I’d be able to afford one or actually buy one I could.

Not sure the new Defender will see that niche if the DC100 is anything to go by…

Looks a bit Skoda Yeti to be honest.

What are they going to do with all the left over Leyland Sherpa head and tail lamps, and Morris Marina door handles that they got left in a huge warehouse in the Midlands?

Yo is all sooooo not with the curve dudes, our market segment donut git muddy innit. Is all afters n looking weljel inTarn.

It’s clearly crayoned by the guy who snapped his B2 when chalking the Evoke.

It was always a bit downmarket the Disco. Fitted rural Solicitors in check shirts admirably, but the true monied went for the up scaled Disco, the RR Sport.

    I hate it.

The Disco (barring the Defender) is the only slightly utilitarian/comfy enough model left in the range now, the RR, RR Sport, Evoque & Freelander are all a bit too nice/posh/townified to be towing diggers and stuff about with, the Disco can still pull it off though, a bit like the old RR’s – work in the week, play on the weekends, but still be smart enough for a posh do.

LR profits soaring though aren’t they? So people must be buying them, just not the sort of people who use them for any off road/utility purposes. So many LR owners must be sooooo over spec’d. in terms of the offroad and towing capabilities of these trucks – why spend £70k on a RR when £20k of that could be in the 4wd system to just drive it around town?

Anyone any good with photoshop? Im intrigued to see if, as I suspect, it looks like a jacked up saab 9-5 estate?
Cover up the bottom half of the picture with your hand using the line that runs across the doors just below the windows as a guide!

    No? Just me then?!!

So everyone looks at you and knows you is minted like. The reason LR is making money is because they managed to hit the market for more money than sense and a desire to get the new one next year. So they have found the formula, sell ugly cars that cost loads to people with no taste.

    I rather like it.

I’m always bewildered at the criticism of perceived buyers of vehicles: LR have in recent years become massively successful (since being owned by Tata it seems). Design and manufacture in the UK, and all we want to do is criticise the business for our perceptions of the buyers of its products.

Not everyone wants a hair-shirt vehicle. And not everyone needs to be off road all day long – I’d question how many critics are themselves.

Most amusing, though, is the suggestion that people who buy these very expensive cars have more money than sense. My guess is that for many of the buyers, it’s precisely because they do have some sense that they have the money to buy these vehicles.

Oh, and the weird c-pillar aside, I suspect it will be successful.

and yet most of them buy a top of the range very off road capable tank to prance round the local shopping centre. On the cash to buy, I think it’s more enough for the deposit and then finance the rest.

I’m not knocking LR they have made a great step forward, they have found a market segment that has enough money to run a huge 4×4 who have no actual need for any of the features that differentiate it from a 5 series etc.

Would you say that tying up £60k in cash in a depreciating asset is a financially prudent thing to do? Or would financing it make more sense, and putting the other £55k to work elsewhere?

Genuine question, I imagine many people won’t finance anything due to some sort of mental block/phobia, whereas those who are able to make money work for them would probably faint at the idea of buying such an asset with cash.

I get slated by my mates for liking the Evoque, not sure about this effort, a lot of overhang on the back for real 4x4ing but I guess its not really going to go off road.

I don’t mind it looks Ok better than a box. It’s not meant to be a true 4×4 any more hasn’t ever really the Discovery although it was always reasonable capable the current ones aren’t too bad either off road.

Efficient doens’t mean bad to drive. Look at BMW. The problem with SUVs is that the size is always going to cost fuel, for no good reason.

To be honest LR are to be applauded (slightly) for the Evoque and this – the reason they look squashed is cos they are low, which should improve economy somewhat.

PDI’d and drove the very first RR in town. First apprentice to attend a Rover training school and a few other milestones before quitting the motor trade!
Have a wee soft spot for them.
Biking buddy has a new one on order. He went self employed a few years ago and works 7 days a week, don’t begrudge him buying one, it is one of his few pleasures in life( which could be short given family history!)
If I ever had the money I would buy one rather than any BM, Merc etc of similar price…..

I like it. Far more stylish than any German thing and will have the off-road capability even if the overwhelming majority of owners won’t use it. But then you could say that about a lot of ‘specialist’ cars. What modern hot hatch owners use or are capable of using the performance potential of their cars let alone drivers of more serious machinery like M3s, 911 turbo’s etc. the majority of owners won’t actually own these cars. They’ll be company cars or lease cars. If I could choose between one of these for a company car amongst a sea of similar boring euro-boxes I know what I’d choose. One of these vs. Q7 vs. X5 vs. X6 vs. ML vs. Toureg vs. Ceyenne, it’s no contest. But as I use my own dosh for cars I’ll aim my sights somewhat lower!

Just goes to show that even though we don’t have a clue how to run a successful car company, we can still design and engineer them as well as anyone.

the current ones aren’t too bad either off road.

Except for the minor detail that most break down before they reach the farm gate

I like the design, but as an fairly recent ex-Disco owner, I’d take a lot of convincing about their build quality to buy back into their brand

EDIT – just saw it’s got lasers!!! WHERE DO I SIGN..?
