During tonights ride my knee cap felt like it wanted to pop off my knee. Very strange feeling, not too painful but not had it before and had to give my leg a right good waggle about to get it to go away for a while. It came back but not quite as bad but then the climbing had pretty much all been done.

Anyone know what could cause this?

Oh and while we’re on about niggling bodies, getting lower back pain from nearly every ride now. Again no idea

Sounds to me like you’ve changed something. Saddle height or fore/aft adjustment is sufficient to cause knee issues if you’re spending a long time in the saddle. Cleat position also?

I had knee issues begin at the end of last year when I got a new bike, sorted now but, bloody hell, I spent a lot on physio and chiro’s before I got a foam roller and played with the bikes variables.

SBZ why would you say ITB based on that? Cyclists are more prone to shortened ham strings and quad imbalances causing patella tracking issues.

Saddle height it is then as I dont use cleats. Its not a long time in the saddle, a quick lap round local trails. Prob 8/8.5 mile in total.

Thinking about it, i dropped the seat a bit more last time I put the bike in the car just for easier loading. I’ll have a look next time I’m out.

I doubt very much it’s ITB, I’ve had ITB through biking. It sounds like something else to me as ITB is generally a pain to below and to the outer side of the petella, not underneath. Probably an over stretched anteria / posteria ligamnent.

I don’t wish to sound alarmist….but…..I’d seek a medical opinion. I posted a thread on knee pain that developed initially in a similar fashion to yours. That started in December. I’m still off the bike after an unconclusive arthroscopy & now doing a long course of physio for patella tendinopathy. An early diagnosis may have prevented a lot of this 😯

Bloody hell Davesport, I could really do without time off the bike. Well sport in general, I play hockey too and its always worried me running about like a loon on astroturf, the twisting and turning on such hard ground. Both my dad and his twin suffer with their knees and my cousin a couple of years older also has issues with his.

Like you say maybe some proper medical advice is needed.

It’s very likely nothing to worry about. I’ve had other soft tissue injuries before & the GP’s answer is to take it easy for a while & give “it” a chance to recover. I backed off on the amount & intensity of the riding I was doing…..but too late to prevent things from becoming serious. I can see me being off the bike until Aug-Sep. Gutted doesn’t come close 😥

    Good luck with yours. D.

Its not ITB, the pain is in the wrong place.

More likely that your saddle is too low, front knee pain is “usually” due to a low saddle. Also coupled with the mentioned back pain points towards low saddle syndrome. And before anyone suggest a low saddle can’t cause back pain its just as bad as a too high saddle, causes the small of the back to curve rather than sit straight.

If in doubt go see a bike fitter.
