Kindle digital rights management – can I get around it?

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite for my partner for Christmas which is happily registered with her Amazon account.

I also bought a book compilation for her, which I paid for through my Amazon account. When she tries to read the book on her new Kindle it refuses to open it, saying that it’s licensed to a different user. I assume that this is some sort of digital rights management system and is complaining because the e-book was bought through a different Amazon account to the one that the Kindle itself is registered to. Are we stuck or is there a way I can transfer the rights to my partner or disable it altogether?

Hey, more than welcome. I came across it in an article on Flipboard, and thought it would come in handy! Certainly worth dissemination. I’ll be making use of it, at the moment I have books spread across four ereaders on my pad and phone, and some of those have Adobe DRM which only allows them to be used in Bluefire, and others only work in Kindle. They wish to be liberated… 😉

Am I missing something ?

Obviously this is for your personal books only – I got caught out with the nasty DRM AAC files from the early iTunes store and refuse to let it happen again. All of my books get converted and stored away in an open format as soon as I buy them.

Oops! 😳 Sorry, that was an older set of instructions for getting ebooks out of Stanza, an ereader that Amazon bought and killed off. The one I MEANT to post up is this one, that uses a Calibre plug-in:

It’s connected to the fact that Amazon can arbitrarily delete your books without telling you why.
Apologies again for the confusion, I hadn’t bookmarked this one, and I thought I had.

Quick question to maybe save a new post, I’ve used calibre to put some books from elsewhere on to my kindle they were sent to my kindle but some have actually appeared on my amazon account in my kindle management page and I can then sent them to my other registered devices and use whispersync to keep my place on various devices. But some of them don’t appear there at all

So anyone know what I must be missing in the files that my amazon account hasn’t picked up during the sync

In answer to the OP. You can just register your partners Kindle to your account and let her download the books. I think books have a limit of 5 downloads or something

Errr… you can just download books from other sources (kindles etc) and just drag them into the documents folder on the kindle. job done!

Another thumbs up for Calibre here. However, bear in mind it is still breaking the law to do so and your agreement with Amazon is merely a rental for which your right to read can be revoked without notice.
