I’ve been riding my new 2nd hand e-bike for the past 3 weeks. I know there is a lot of hate for them out there. I also know a lot of people would like one once the price drops.

Ask me anything you’ve wondered about E-bikes and I’ll give you an honest answer rather than the sponsored and promotional articles seen in magazines or youtube.

Who would win in a fight between Boris Johnson and John Prescott?

What’s it like as a bike? I mean I guess it shoots up hills with relative ease, but is it like sailing a cruise liner when the going gets fun?

    MTB? Hybrid? Road-bike? Shopper? Cargo?

‘Ebike’ on it’s own is a bit like saying ‘ask me anything about my bike, I bought a bike’?

Not one “are you old/ill/weak enough to justify DESTROYING OUR TRAILS” question yet? I’m pleasantly surprised.

Is that an African or European hamster?

LOL I expected worse from you lot than this.

    1. Prescott would win in a fight. He’s got previous form.

    2. Bike is grey.

    3. Didn’t sell the house to fund the bike, it was 2nd hand and actually cheaper than a a new regular bike.

    4. Its a Scott Full Suspension E-genius.

    5. Your track pump is in the back of your car.

    6. How does it ride – well…. like a heavy bike is the honest answer. They weigh a ton. It’s not that noticeable on downhill sections other than when you need to correct a mistake from bad riding, the bike is hard to shift around underneath you. I find it almost impossible to bunny hop on it… most jumps are nose high (note: im rubbish at bunny hopping on my normal bike). Uphill as you’d expect it’s amazing… it’s smile inducing. On technical twisty climbs you have to actually be careful as you might put yourself into a tree.

    7. There was a jokey question here about me destroying trails with my heavy bike. I’m about 11 stone… the bike is 3.5 stone so combined weight is actually less than than my 6ft6″ 16stone riding mate on his normal bike.

    8. I was definitely born lazy… then it got better throughout my 20’s. Now im in my 30’s lazyness and lack of fitness has started to set in again. Family, work, persistent ankle, knee injuries and asthma all contribute. E-bike has given me a bit more confidence that I can go out for all day rides again.

    9. It’s an extra option. They always interested me and one came up cheap 2nd hand so I thought why not. My human powered bike has been giving me dirty looks though.

I can on a good month get out once or twice to Wales for a ride. I’d been dead on my feet after a few hours of riding. The E-bike allows me to stay out for full days and maximise my time.

    10. I’m slimish but getting rounder as the years pass on. I did have to upgrade the brakes on the bike… the extra momentum from the weight really does affect the handling. I got used to it on the 2nd ride… I just need to brake slightly sooner than usual.

    11. The weight of the hamster is it’s mass x the acceleration of gravity.

    The only questions that matter:

“Are you riding it a fair amount and are you enjoying it?”

How many KOMs have you set yet?

    15. Honestly…. 1 so far. However it was one of the new Strava E-bike segments at Llandegla. I was the first one to ride it so got KOM as a default. Sad that I was still chuffed with it.

I have been good and haven’t logged an ebike ride as a normal ride. It’s so tempting.

    16. I tried on the e-bike. Lost control, slammed brakes went over the handle bars. No one saw. Don’t tell anyone sshhhh.

what model is it, how old is it, & how shagged is the drivetrain/battery?

I demoed an E-Genius 720 and am tempted… looking at the model range though only the 700 comes with “proper” e-bike components e.g. upgraded brakes, and that is pretty spendy!

    The only questions that matter:

“Are you riding it a fair amount and are you enjoying it?”

    17. Great question and getting right to the point. I’ve ridden more in the past 3 weeks then I have all year on my human powered bike. At the end of a long day at work you know you can hop on it and have an amazing ride without dieing of exhaustion. I’ve stopped saying “I’ll wait till the weekend for a ride”.

    18. It’s a 720. It was in reasonable condition… I had to bolt on upgrades, new brakes, stem, bars, dropper etc. But I’ve had to do this with all the bikes I’ve bought 2nd hand.

Durability – time will tell. The motor and battery are in good condition. It had done 500km before I bought it. However.. yep, I’m expecting the upkeep of this bike to be much higher than my human powered bike. The tougher components are more expensive and it’s going to do more miles. Groan.

Oh jolly good, I have been waiting for a ‘random questions’ thread to come up.

We have “Victorian” to describe stuff when Victoria was about, “Georgian” for George times, and then “Elizabethan” for the Elizabeths. What will it be when Charles takes over, will we use Charlesian or Charlsan or Charlean or something else?

There are machine guns and there are sub-machine guns. In what way are the latter sub? Are they just inferior machines?
