A lady roadie owned me going through ambergate the other day on the a6. I gave her 20 yards then caught her up on my gnar poon. I drafted her and enjoyed the view back to belper. That’ll teach her I’m sure!

The thing that makes me laugh is when I’m on my road bike trying to stay in HR zone 3 for a few hours, and a hardcore-you-know-the-score fatty on a MTB starts bombing past me as I’m maintaining a training schedule up a hill, and then they chuckle and smirk as I hold back staying in zone 3.

That’s what makes me laugh.

Once, aged 18 or so (and full of sprint without much endurance) me and a mate were coming back from 5 or so miles in the woods, with a 10 mile road ride at each end. As we pulled onto the road we saw a roadie some distance ahead. We turned ourselves inside out to catch and pass him, which we did. So much so that by the time I got home I’d bonked so badly I was in a really bad way, shaking and almost too confused to get myself something to eat. Felt awful for ages.

The roadie was cruising comfortably, probably on a long base ride. Not much of a victory, really 🙂

It’s fun to see if you can close the gap on a roadie up ahead, but it usually only works until he/she actually notices you’re there. 🙂

Any roadie I can pass/drop is by definition not trying all that hard.

I once went past 3 roadies on a cold n wet n windy day up a long slow incline. They then proceeded to use me as a wind n water break before passing me at the top.

I quite enjoy draughting roadies when on the mountain bike. It’s good for them, makes them realise they need to ride harder.

But you can only do it for so long as ultimately they should be on a significantly more efficient bike.

I did enjoy beasting a couple wobbling all over the place on their folding bikes on a hill the other day and those little kids on the strawberry line didn’t know what hit them when I powered past 😈 😉

Dont insult roadies op, thats 90% of this forum who do actually ride a bike.

“One handed pass” = OP is so unstable on his bike that he’s unable to take his hands off the bars until stationary. So one handed is “showing off”.

Or alternatively the roadie had been on the phone, or putting some food back in his pocket, or some clothes. You know, all those things that stable and incontrol riders can do on the move.

A bloke has done that to me twice on the cycle way part of my commute home in almost the same spot both times; comes past blowing out of his arse only to almost immediately anchor on and turn across me down a side path. I just found it odd. Now that I know it’s coming, I may just up my pace as he comes along side and block his turn. Because, you know, that’s the mature thing to do.

Or just not trying. I do most of my commutes at an easy pace as I do 20 miles each way pretty much every day. I seldom put a lot of effort in.

On the way home I have a long uphill drag, about 4 miles, and I had a guy last week on a rattly old hybrid with hub gears who put in a massive effort to pass me, he passed but couldn’t keep up the momentum once he was out in the wind, it was quite funny to watch, i moved further out into the road so I wasn’t drafting him and he continued his gargantuan effort. The best bit was when he reached for the bar ends he had mounted either side of the stem so he could get into an aero tuck.

I often pass folks on my roadie, then get overtaken by them straight after. Usually I’ll nail myself on a hill, overtake someone, then have a rest at the top.

Do people look badly upon doing this?

It’s only “owning” them if three of you are passed while having biscuits before the last 20miles of the 130 of the day, then proceed to hunt them down and overtake while smoking massive stinky spliffs and all chatting and riding no-handed.

aye there’s no sport there, even in the good natured commuter racing, it takes 2 to “race”. So, if you’re in the mood for a bit of fun be sure you’re not giving it 100% when you pass, if they speed up then it’s game on, put the hammer down…..and find out what happens 🙂

Dropping people who won’t take a turn up front is also perfectly reasonable imo.

The only times I care are on big headwind days, where I’m always happy to meet one of the commuters on my route that I know a bit so we can draft each other into it.

Luckily my commute is pretty flat so I won’t get “owned” by any e-bikes on it. Which is a great relief. Especially if I ever wave or say hi to anyone I pass.

I cruised past a guy who had been trying to clip in to his (hopefully) new spd so pedals for about 300m today. I gave him a little wave, and so did my son on the back of the bike

Once on a trail break event out Pricess Risbourgh way, myself and cycling buddy spotted a rather portly roadie in full team team lycra a hundred yards in front of us on a short road climb that joined the ridgeway with another bridleway. As we were both on single speeds (me on a singular swift) we both enjoyed reeling him in and passing him. Can’t remember the excuse he came out with as we passed. He did say something lame..
If only I was fit enough to still do that today 🙁

Oh that’s what the P in P Risborough stands for, I’ve wondered since we went to Thorpe Park last year but not bothered to look it up.

Nodders are out in force this week, had a guy on a battered mountain bike try to race me up a hill on my way home, he dropped behind for a bit but then did some risky filtering to plop himself right in front of me at the next set of lights and I was stuck behind him for the next mile because the traffic was too bad to over take.

Someone else went past me as I was sat at a red light this morning then when the light changed I caught up pretty much straight away. Does my nut when people jump reds, especially when the general public are more bike aware for these three weeks. Makes us all look like cooks.

Next time I’ll have my helmet cam on 😉

As for e-bikes…when I’m 77 I’m getting one for sure. Probably be nuclear powered by then.

Perhaps I need to explain the now infamous “one handed pass”… I was slogging it on the start of the climb almost straight away. When the roadie caught us up and them proceeded to ride by with one hand messing around with his headphones and generally trying to make it look easy. I dont think he realized how steep the road was to become around the next few bends.

So, with little encouragement the e-rider (old man) was off partly to test his bike out and see what it could do.

If makes all you guys happy, I’m the one who got lift his bike over all the gates….and believe me it’s heavy.

I know what you’re saying – I’ve seen those headphones/smartphone/Garmin/water-bottle fiddlers/beard-twizzlers at it with my own eyes. They have a whole ride to make necessary adjustments but they save the moment just to look nonchalant as they blow past! Projection be d*mned! Deserve all the septuagenarian moped punishment they get 😈

Many years ago I was riding up Quarry Bank in Cradley Heath on an early Saturday morning. Aged about 20 on my 25lb XC bike, characteristically hungover and knackered, I was blowing out of my arse. I was overtaken by a woman in at least her 70’s on an aged 20″ wheeled shopper with a basket on the front.

It’s something I’d do, to be fair, build up passing speed, then make sure your cig is lit when you glide past them.

Bonus points for taking a swig out of your bottle at the same time. Lol!

I’m at the hardcore opposite end of the spectrum. Not being riding as much as I used to due to FunkmasterJunior. Climbing a swine of a hill on my super light Transition Trans AM (made from the highest quality lead) and wheezing like Darth Vader having an asthma attack.

Next thing I know I’m being overtaken by a group of power walkers / hill runner types. I smiled at them and laughed, safe in the knowledge that I would catch them on the downhill segment that was just around the corner. I would have my vengeance, screaming down the hill, yelling my battle cry of “coming through” whilst watching them dive for cover like so many startled rabbits in the face of my awesome, gnar skillz!

By the time I got to said downhill section they were nowhere to be seen. Pwned!
