It was wrong….owning / bullying a Roadie ;)

Myself and my Dad were out on a ride yesterday. He is 77 and rides a Giant Dirt-e. At the start of a road climb on our route a “Roadie” approaches from behind and whist passing decides to do a cocky one handed pass and proceeded to start up the hill.

I’m on my tractor and would never have a chance against his bike that weighed less than a matchbox and skinny tyres.

So I said to the old man go and get him.

Off he went in pursuit. Caught the roadie up and he seemed surprised to see the Giant on his tail. He tried to pull away but was beginning to fail. The old man drop backed, switched into sport and powered on past up and totally left the roadie for dead.

The Giant beat the roadie up the hill by at least 3 minutes 🙂

According to my Dad the roadie gave him a wry smirk as he passed and went on his way. We dived onto some some singletrack and went our way.

Yes is was wrong to bully a roadie and totally own him. But he should’nt of done the one handed pass and this hill is easy look.

We have a lot of middle aged fatty commuters on ebikes here you learn not to chase them, bless, their boners must make it hard to stay seated 😉

I’m pretty sure the roadie couldn’t care less about being passed by a vehicle with a motor attached, it happens to me 100’s of times most rides 😆 Good on your dad for staying active at 77.

I’m all for e bikes don’t get me wrong and I know a few old geezers who could “own” quite a few younger cyclists, but using an electric powered bike sort of misses the point, no?

I beat a whole group of roadies to the top of an Alp once by at least half an hour. They were wearing lycra and aero helmets, the lot! I had a cup of coffee then stood in front of my van waving my nob at them as they wheezed past. Totally owned.

I’m all for a bit of informal ‘racing’ and turning myself inside out to keep up/overtake the guy in front, but why do people bother when on E-bikes?

Round our way it’s the season for roadies esp now the Tour has started

I ride a mile or so back along the lanes from the Chase and the last section is downhill onto the main road. I always cut the corner (it’s a cycle lane for the school), join the road via the bus stop at warp 10 😈 and then hammer it the last few 100 m home.

Last night I joined the road just behind one of the said roadies. He was going for it 110% and so was I we both passed another roadie who must’ve wondered WTF was going on fat bike vs road bike. Roadie had to slow for traffic in the outside lane I passed on the inside with a friendly thumbs up

You do know that motor pacing has a long history in road riding? To be honest, I’d be delighted if someone in their 70’s was able to ride an e-road bike and be able to keep up with me. But “owned”, really?

Your interpretation of his actions shows massive insecurity issues on your part. Seek help immediately, before you hurt yourself.

If he’d shouted “Wan&^%$” and given the international sign for being a to$$er as he passed you it would have been different.

I think if the roadie was wearing these he deserved everything he got!

The thing that made me laugh when I do it is that initial look of surprise/panic when a 3″ tyre’d full suss flies past them on their super light wonder horse, even if it only lasts a few seconds (takes a bit longer on mine as the battery is integrated, so harder to spot) before they realise you are on an ebike.

In truth I’m actually kind of embarrassed when I overtake on it, as the reaction is always the same. ‘Bloody ebikes…’
