I’m having issues getting stans sealant to seal my nevegals onto a set of XR400 rims (with rim strip). The tyres go on fine, and will seat and inflate without sealant. However once sealant is added this does not seem to seal. It just bubbles around the tyre rim interface, and slightly up the tyre wall and never seems to go off. I’ve tried reseating the tyre several times, made sure I held the bottle upside down whilst shaking before use. The bubbling looks similar to what you get when using washing up liquid on the tyre and the liquid coming through seems very fluid. Wheel has been ridden 10 miles after fitting which didn’t improve the seal at all. Tyre takes about 5-6 hours to go flat. Any suggestions?

I’ve in the past used wheel milk with out this issue on blue grove/nevegals so don’t think its a tyre issue. I also struggled to get a decent seal (though the tyre does stay up) using this same bottle of sealant with bonty mud x’s and mavic 717’s.

Have you tried putting more sealant in? i.e more than the recommended amount? had roughly the same issue with a different tyre/rim combo but just shoved more in and got a seal…

Initially had 1 scoop in, now got 2 scoops in. How much did you shove in to make it work?

I had this with some TLR Rocket Rons, I just had keep topping up the sealant over a week or so until it stayed up. Have you tried leaving the wheel on its side for 15mins? Then flipping it over for another 15mins to get the sealant into the interface.

Have you watched the video on no tubes.com on how to seal the tyre correctly?

as above, hold wheel ‘flat’ and slosh the sealant around for a while then turn over and do the same with the other side – trick is to get enough sealant around the beads to form a ‘skin’

as above + inflate and leave in airing cupboard overnight

I hold the wheel vertical, hands at 9 and 3 oclock, and waggle. then rotate wheel slightly, waggle again. Continue til you’ve waggled the whole wheel. If there is enough sealant you should be able to feel it sloshing as you waggle 🙂

If still bubbling, I lay the tyre on its side over a bucket as recommended, then flip over, then waggle again.

A long time ago yes, will give it another watch.

Yeah that what I thought. Maybe loading lots more sealant in and trying this again would be a good plan. It definitely sounds like I’m having the same issue your all describing the solution to.

@those with experience with both stans and wheel milk does stans normally take longer to go off and seal?

I had this with a set of Maxxis tyres – they just wouldn’t seal. Someone suggested something that I hadn’t considered – the release agent from the tyre mould. I gave them a good clean with meths and they went up noticeably better. Worth a go.

The video on the notubes website is good, but it sounds as though you’ve used tubeless a fair bit so you probably know what you’re doing. Using an old set of panaracers I had to spend quite a bit of time following the method shown in the video. Shake, lay flat, check for leaks with soap. Repeat for a couple of days. On the other hand two sets of specialized 2Bliss tyres have gone up and stayed up with no faff.

Will give that a go thanks. Guess the release agent could interfere with the sealant. That’s a new one on me.
