o2 are doing the phone for £21.50 pm (100 min, 500txts and 500MB). I need to upgrade my phone but the iphone 4 is out of the question, so is the 3GS any good, or should I avoid? Thanks

    Not if its 8MB ! 😯

If you can wait, there are rumours that they will be bring out a cheaper version of the iPhone 4, sometime within the next year… But it could just be a rumour…

I think the new HTCs (which you can get for free on contract) are better than the old iPhones.

Through QUIDCO, Vodafone are offering £250 cashback on 24mth contract HTC Desire S.

Sign up for their £26 per month contract (100 mins, 500 texts, 250MB mobile internet) & you’re effectively getting 10 months free.

    Cashback offer expires 31st July.

I wouldn’t touch a 3GS now, especially as you can get far superior Androids for the same money. 3GS is old hat, bearing in mind that the iPhone 5 is imminent

The new HTCs are indeed better than the old iPhones, when they work!

I went through 7 HTC desires in 6 months because of faults. They wern’t broken externally it was all hardware/software problems they were replaced quickly by orange each time but as there is no backup facility on either the memory card or the HTC sync pc software I had to sign up to google again and re-download all my apps every time, there is no account history from what I can see. and yes that includes your pair for aps, a bloke at work lost a £20 satnav app after only one week!

I now have a second hand iPhone 3G (not the 3GS) and it works fine as a phone its not as fast as the HTC but the 3GS (my wife has one) isnt far off. Where the apple really exceeds is that the app store remembers what you have already downloaded as does iTunes, not sure on the backup for all little settings like pics and ringtones as it hasnt gone wrong and I’ve had it since April

Regular software updates for iPhone have made the old 3G almost obselete now and my 3Gs is going the same way, it keeps switching off and getting more and more easily confused. I would either go for the newer iPhone 4, wait for the alleged 5 or look elsewhere.

Is your 2g still working ok? Do you do all the software updates that arrive? Maybe the 3Gs still has plenty of life left in it yet then and I’m just impatient. Its the switching off mid call thats getting annoying. A friend of mine still uses a 3G but has stopped updating the software as it got slower with each upgrade.

the 3g doesn’t take updates anymore – that’s an apple thing.

the 3gs does take updates, and the new ios5 is going to be compatible with the 3gs aswell. Speedwise, a few mates and colleagues have the 3gs – and they run fine. It has AF camera and much more memory than the 3g…

my 3g is fine – runs a bit slow sometimes, but generally fine.

i’m waiting for iphone 5, then seeing what happens with iphone 4 pricing.

I’ve not updated the 2g. It’s jailbroken/pay as you go and the updates would just relock it. Does what I want from a phone.

A lot of the newer games don’t work with it though.

    I have an ipad2 for games 🙂

I got a great quality unlocked 3GS on ebay for £175 from a trade seller.

I wouldn’t want to get locked into a contract for a 3GS, or an iPhone 4 at the moment, not with new ones on the way.

My old 3G became painfully slow to use, and I tried downgrading back to v3.x with no real improvement.

My 3GS is fine in use and will do me for now.
