Infants Child Bike Seat – Which One?

Going to the Lakes at Easter and am thinking it might be a good time to get Noel in a bike seat and take him for a spin around Grizedales fireroads. He’ll be 18 months old by then but I aren’t sure where to even start looking for a seat. Any ideas? And are there certain better ways of attaching them to the bike? It’ll probably be going on my 456 if thats any help.

I used one that sits behind you, Hamax Siesta, and attaches to a bracket the fixes to your seat tube. My lad seemed to be v comfy in it but it did bounce about quite a bit. Top peak and Hamax both do one that fits to a sort of pannier rack and has some of it’s own susspension, so i reckon off road these would be better.

Then there are the ones that sit infront of you (wee-ride or something) on the top tube, good for talking to the little un but aparently these can come up quite small so it depends on how big you lad is.

My lad is now on a saddle that sits on the top tube and he holds onto the handle bars, but he is nearly three now so I wouldn’t go for that just yet if yours is only 18 month.

Because of the way it attaches to the frame, the rails on the chair flex a bit, so the little fella gets a bit of suspension. The sleep inducing qualities become obvious quickly

The joy of this one is that the mounting stays on your frame. So should you fancy whipping the seat off and having a blast on your own (just a thought) then you can do that in a matter of seconds with no tools required. And if you buy an additional mounting you can swap bikes just as easily. My mum and dad both had them on their bikes for when they took them out too.

(yours for something bikey)when young they didnt really like the bouncing around that much lower tyre pressure helped as did a cushion and a bag of sweets 😉

I used a Hamax Siesta on my 456. Worked fine.

Not the cheapest by a long shot but secure and safe (my ex dropped her bike with our youngest in the seat and she was fine)

Child sits in front of you

Weeride are the tool for the Job, could’nt get the grandkids out of it once they were in it, they can see everything (not just your back) 🙂 (much safer for the child too)

I have the bobike mini, like the wee ride the child sits in front of you but the bracket attaches to the stem (you can get on for the top tube), so the kid sits a little higher and further away from you so less splaying of legs. I also like the fact that if I do crash the bars wont hit him as he just stays inside the bar area. The bracket mine came with is designed for bikes with 1 inch steerers but I presume they do them to fit all bikes.

I have a Hamax Kiss in decent condition which I’d sell for £25 if you’re after one of them Davey.

i briefly had a bobike mini. you can get them with fixing kits to clamp onto the frame (for most mtbs).

It looks like the best option for a little one but it would not fit on any of my bikes.

My cross bike has a cable stop on the top of the top tube where the clamp went, and my mtbs (incl. a 456) were too low / short at the front – the seat would go on but the foot rests on the seat would catch the fork crown so couldnt turn the bars 🙁 Real shame as it looks like the best seat for little ones on the market.

Windowshopper – what size 456 is that? I am trying to work out if a Hamax will fit right on my 16″ frame.

Does not recline which is a good thing. It will mount a seat post so it can go on your full sus if you wish.
