Cougar – thanks for posting both links.

Well worth the read and very thought provoking.

What a load of drivel the first bloke spouts the one with a son, who has one gay freind and he himself isnt gay.

The lady in the responce who says she would be ashamed to have a gay son, should just accept it, or move on,sadly a lot of family units split up because a member of the family turns out gay, its got nothing to with up bringing etc,she needs to sit and think the trauma her son may be going through.

While so called christians are allowed to dip into the big book of rules and choose which ones there going to obey when it suiits them, just perhaps they can tipex out the one that says same sex relationships is wrong.

Just shows you how hypocritical these god botherer’s are, who knows what her son would of done if she had spurned him.

In response to the last two posts – tolerance, love and understanding should be the main tenets of religion, but sadly, in some cases, they’re not. Equally, they should also be (in my humble opinion), a key part of anyones life, regardless of religion or not. Again, sadly, for some people, they’re not.
As ever, I take objection to the ‘god botherers’ stuff that gets posted on threads such as this, but it’s nothing new, and completely pointless trying to argue against. I have a gay son, who I love to bits and am so proud of, words fail me. I’m also a Catholic. Sorry if that doesnt fit in with your preconceptions, and sorry that I’ve talked about this in previous posts, but lets not let that get in the way of selective bias, eh?

What preconceptions? think your the one with preconceptions about some of our comments.

Well, these two for a start, and your comments are there for all to see, so how can I have preconceptions about them?

Nothing preconceived about my comments, I read the OP’s link and think the gay teenagers mother was very offensive and outspoken about her views and beliefs, does that not constitute a god botherer.

I believe your comment was ‘these god botherers’. Not all religious people think like she does, so why tar everyone with the same brush?

“These” meaning the ones who have the overt views against gay people! And anyone who tries to flaunt push their religious views on anyone else.

If you had perhaps used the term ‘some of these god botherers’, I would have agreed with you…

I think the letter showed that her religious convictions were trumped by her love for her son, would she have been so forgiving of someone else’s son, I doubt it.

So many aspects of modern society are utterly dependant on cultures growing out of religion before they can evolve and improve. It has taken hundreds of years in Europe, and we are still a long way from truly shaking off all the paranoia and prejudice that came with it. Other countries have only taken the smallest steps towards liberation, and there is not likely to be any noticeable improvement in any of our lifetimes.

It will continue to rule the lives of people in many cultures for thousands of years. You certainly can’t remove overnight a cultural parasite that has thrived on ignorance, greed and fear since before the dawn of recorded history.

If you have grown up in a fairly free and well informed society and have had the benefits of a reasonable education and the ability to learn about the world around you, then you have a responsibility to the less fortunate to not perpetuate dangerous fantasies mostly for the benefit of your own ego.

    Stop it immediately! 🙂

Question, why doesn’t someone start a gay-branch to Christianity where EVERYONE is loved by the Church/religion?

No quibble/no grey area. Just a Rainbow church.

There are other branches, why not? Or is this crass naivety?

    You mean like http://www.gaychurch.org/ ?

Read about the Rainbow Nation and the journey of truth of the Pastor of the Community Gospel Church, Dayton, Ohio, Samuel Kader Sr.

    .

    Or is this crass naivety?

Yep, pretty much so. For some completely inexplicable reason those who condemn religion, ranting and raving about it, and want to put restrictions on it, let’s call them the anti-god botherers, are apparently totally unaware, or at least pretend to be, that anyone can start any religion saying absolutely anything they want, precisely because there are no restrictions on religion…….naivety indeed.

Religious freedom is one of the most basic and fundamental freedoms and human right of all. And that example above shows precisely why it is so important.

Can’t people refer to christians as christians and not god botheres or other defamatory language? Its just not nice and not in keeping with the feeling of the two artciles posted (which i have read, good work OP). I doin’t see any derogatory terms being used to describe the athiests, why do you feel it big and clever to use it against people with christian beliefs?

    Happy Easter.

I know you seem to have strong feelings on this but really – just a little hyperbolic.

IMO religious freedom has to be tempered by respect for others wish not to have religious nonsense thrust at them all the time. Keep it in the private sphere. Consenting adults in private only please. I find being told what I can and cannot do and being told I am a morally inferior person offensive.

I think the right to life and liberty is rather stronger and more important that the right to religious freedom. Any right to religious freedom does not include the right to be offensive to others.

“Nothing is going to stop people believing in superstitions and religions until we lose our fear of death, but don’t foist it on me, please. I am perfectly happy for you to have these toys. To clutch them to yourself for comfort, but keep it private. Play with your toys at home, invite tothers to come round and play with your toys. Do not bring them to my house and force me to play with them. I will not play with your toys. And do not take them to my children’s school and require that they also play with them. No more priestly and clerical bullying. Do I make myself clear? Thankyou”…
