Rachel, that’s awesome. I think it’s one of the best usernames on here 😉

I’m still the owner of the domain name allthegear.net, where a few friends and I had a little website, now lapsed.

Must do something with it one day again…

I must admit I’ve always liked this place, I’ve never had any problems and sometimes posts have mad me laugh out loud, some have made me sad and one or two have made me cross but mostly it’s all good fun. Was just curious about the number of girls around, whenever we go to bike events tis the same, bout 30 blokes to every woman. Is a shame cos I can’t see what’s not to enjoy (about riding a bike not being surrounded by chaps).

I’m thinking about this to much now, I’m going to bed! 🙂

It never occurred to me to pretend to be a bloke. I don’t think i could pull it off convincingly. Some of the posts wound me up a bit, but tbh it’s a mostly blokish forum and it’s only a few I think. Most posters seem pretty reasonableand some seem like a laugh. My only other forum experience was after ellen and that place makes this look like one of those posh clubs.

Plus the bike advice is spot on, there’s always someone who knows

one here too * waves * more of a lurker though if im honest.

mrs julian is a long-time lurker here and probably posts a couple of times a month. She will be mostly out riding whilst I am wasting time on the computer… She posts on shecycles a bit but remarks that there are only about 20 or so regulars on there too (probably the same ones on this thread).

Many of the comments made from users to female posters were a touch on the perverted side and although it was probably meant in good humour and for some, flattering, I personally felt uncomfortable when wanting to get involved in a topic.

I guess that’s just a fact of life with a supposedly male-dominated arena.

Having said that, I think there’s generally a good mix on here. It’s certainly a more grounded place than other male-oriented forums I frequent; one being a football forum and the other for a certain make of automobile (the former in particular attracts all kinds of delinquents and subsequently descends into farce at times).

I think a forum only really works if you feel comfortable enough to contribute – and if that means adopting an “alien” identity, then so be it. Surely it’s about creating value as opposed to anti-value?

Sharki and TSY, you have both done excellent jobs of coming across as men on the forum. So many blokey contributions to threads over such a long time.

Like a kind of internet gender ‘deep cover’. 😆

Aye! Over the last few years i’ve gained some confidence at an expense though.

I still ride solo a lot as most male riders can’t handle my training pace.

Feels odd to turn up at events and be confident, yet to be part of a large internet cycling community and to find it difficult to be me.

As a feminist I can say that I believe women are under-represented on this forum. I think all of the guys here are suitably sensible that any seriously misogynistic behaviour would result in a new arsehole for the culprit. And rightly so.

    Yes, well done.

Make sure you keep off those cigarettes though TSY!

I will be watching you (and those girls you are hitting on will tell me if you are stinking of smoke 😉 )

Edit – Damn you Ho Hum.

3 more posts and I was going to start inviting other contributors for a ride in the woods… interested Sharki?

119.5 hrs smoke free and going slightly mad.

    Seriously?

Can’t say I’d agree with that either – if anything, there’s every chance that kind of behaviour will develop, not subdue.

Big Ho hum is watching you! 😉

Anyway, what is with this 119.5 hours? In the “who smokes” thread you said it was 138 hours. A wee typo perhaps?

    Keep it up mate 🙂

In my defence I have been drinking! Anyone recommend an alcoholic beverage that tastes nice with chewing gum?

I’m a girl, clue in my username. Agree that not many of us grinding up Yorkshire’s finest hills, wave to many a bloke tho’. Am a member of Skipton Women’s MTB Group tho’, my husband amusingly (or not) calls us Skipton Ladies Amateur Pedallers. Work it out.

Absynthe. Someone left a bottle after a party and I don’t wish to open a whole bottle of wine. 😈

One mate does but because of her boyfriend but she just moans all the way round a trail. Constantly. Grrr.

Why do people do that? grr+1

I think I’m displaying enough issues with my personality right here, right now, not to start drinking Absynthe, I might do a van Gogh. 😯

Depends what flavour gum, I’m a big fan of the cinnamon gum imagine that would go with cider? (not a cider fan so wouldn’t know!)

    TheSouthernYeti

Lifer – It’s minty NRT gum.

I know the mods get a bit of stick for toning stuff down when it gets out of hand, but I think it’s a better place for it.

+1. I have been guilty in the past of being “too blokey” (on other forums) and feel almost ashamed of acting like such a knob as it’s not how I am in person at all – think the anonymity of the internet gets the better of me 😆

    Heya girls!
I’m new to the forum… have lurked around a bit in the past but never stayed around for long. Maybe now there’s more female presence i’ll stick around 🙂

Anybody here based in the North West??

    Divagirl

Hi Gingi – I’m in the North West – I tend to lurk rather than post on the forum 🙂

Yep I’m here, if lurking a lot counts!

    Teagirl that made me laugh.

I’m in the west midlands round Herefordshire, so is my moany friend. She hates fod but thinks she’ll be ok with cwm carn & wants to go. I don’t want to dampen her enthusiasm but know she’ll have moaned herself silly by half way up the first climb :-s

Another lurker here, with just the occasion question asked when I need help! Although I may be more present in the future since I’ve just handed in my notice with no job to go to 😯

But I’m really confused, are Sharki and TSY actually female then? Or am I missing a joke… it’s too early.

    emma82

Alpine I believe they may secretly wish they were women and tsy may actually be preparing for gender reassignment surgery but at the moment they appear to be chaps. Although from previous threads they do seem to act more like a pair of old ladies than blokes 🙂

If it’s any consolation, I’m confused, too!!!

Prepare for what? Being made a woman? I saw a film of it once being done, jeez, made my eyes water!! Glad I was born with it already there

Ah so, I did wonder what was going on! Some previous posts were rather convincing about their “masculinity”.

There are quite a few blokes on here who identify far too strongly with their feminine side
