    Before it starts costing money?

130 brake TDCi. 54 plate 125,000 miles full Ford service history.

Its paid off now, in full and as it is my company car opt out car, I can (according to company rules) keep it until it is 6 years old, September 2010.

Still on original clutch, DMF and rear sub frame bushes, all weak points in a Mondeo so I’m lucky / drive like a vicar.

If I keep it, I’ll be able to stash 270 a month in car allowance but am aware it will need some TLC as mentioned above at some point.
    So,

Have done 3000 miles a month generally but this seems to have dropped to 2000 a month in the last 2 months.

I scrapped a 1.4 L-reg Astra last September. 160000 on the clock. I’ve now got an M-reg Astra with 99700 on the clock. It runs sweet. I like Astras.

Like anything, the more you look after it, the longer it lasts. I’ve only had petrol and usually get 150000+. You’ve got a diesel. With regular servicing and respectful handling I’d expect 180000+.

mondeo’s used to easily handle 200k. My petrol cavalier did 210k when I sold it and it still ran great, bit of rust on the sills but apart from that it was brilliant.

i’d expect any diesel engine that you look after to do quarter of a mill no problem, especially a rock solid one like a ford.

Good chance you’ll need to do the clutch and sub frame bushes, mine went at 118000 and 98000 respectivly and that was pretty good.Fuel pump, injector and turbo problems can be a killer but everything else can easly go the 1/4 mill.

I had a D reg Ford P100 from new with 6 miles on the clock, on the day I left the company & handed it back it had recorded 264,751 miles!
In that time outside of standard service items it had 1 new clutch, 1 exhaust valve & 4 sets of tyres.

I also bought a VW Scirocco GTI with 115,000 miles on the trip and ran it for another 7 years with minimal issues, in fact its still going and now has over 300,000 miles on the clock (though I understand its had a total rebuild)

Both of these vehicles I drove like my hair was on fire, but IMO the main reason they lasted so long was 1. Regular oil changes 2. Not much town driving.

    Be fine I reckon.
Regular oil & filters should see it clear another 50k easily.
Local taxi firm reputed to have had one to 260k.

My old K reg petrol Mondeo did 200k before it was scraped. I now have a Mk3 diesel the same as you and expect 250k at the least.

Ticking timebomb. It MIGHT go on for another 100k, but it probably wont. Cars have this wierd tendancy…once one component goes they all go. Cross your finger.

I would have thought you should(!!) get a lot more miles yet out of a modern diesel engine (like a TDCI).
I am currently running a ’99 peugeot HDI engine with 210K on the clock and it still runs great.

I have the same car/engine, similar age but half the miles. Have to admit I am a bit twitchy about anything not normal (hesitation, little surges in power etc) but you have to remember, there are tons of these cars on the roads, the only stories you hear are the failures, you never hear of the cars that ‘didn’t have a dmf replacement at 50k’ and ‘didn’t need £1200 of injectors’ 10k later 🙂

One tip for the dmf (though sounds like you don’t need it at 125k) is start the car in neutral with foot off the clutch. If you start it with the clutch held down (in gear or not) that can increase the risk of the dmf failing. Squeaky clutch pedal is an early sign of failure, mine squeaks a little but I’m sure its just the pedal itself

Couple of things I’ve done recently:

Clean the EGR valve…it’ll be full of black gooey gunk, specially if you use supermarket fuel. Black smoke under acceleration is a sign it needs doing. Its quite quick and easy, just very messy! You need a can of brake cleaner or similar. Seems to have made the engine run smoother, the car used to hesitate under gentle acceleration occasionally and also do the same when slowing down in gear.

My car also had rust under all the door edges, it got fixed under warranty last month 🙂 I didn’t have any rust under the bootlid or bonnet but many do. If your car is a facelift you might be getting very close to the end of the corrosion warranty, mine is 12 years but at some point they changed it to 6 when the realised there was a problem! http://www.fordmondeo.org/forum/showtopic.php?tid/777309/tp/1/

Even if you do end up with a £2k repair bill sometime in the next two years, your £270 a month will more than cover the costs and you’ll still come out richer overall 🙂 Maybe save the £270 for six or eight months or so to provide your own insurance fund.

Gone are the 100K mile car back in the 80's.

Keep it serviced and don't thrash it like some stupid owners do and wonder why it dies an early death.

    Probably be another 40K easily.

Blimey, there's a bit of a thread resurrection though.

Right on time for an update though to see if it made it till now (when he has to change it)
