Will a 3 foot fence be high enough to keep our dog in our garden or will the lure of next doors chickens give him extra jumping power.
Not had jack russell before so unsure how high he’s going to be able to jump.
    Thanks

3ft – easy. My little boarder terrier used to be able to jump into my arms no problem and from standing. Think 5-6ft!

    ‘easily’ 5ft according to this;

You may have to roof your garden.

The current Jack Russell high jump world record is 1.98m. It must be true because it’s on the internet. Where on the internet?

About 30′ if you shoot it in the knackers with a airsoft gun.

how high it can jump and what height fence it can get over are very different.

i watched ours take a run up, hit the tree at about 4′ up and use that to clear the 6’+ chainlink fence at the bottom of the garden.

then we had to give up, she could dig down/under easily enough if she wanted.

    proper hunter.

A roof and sides might not be enough…

My wife used to have one he would do a 2m wall easy by running up it, we used to put biscuits on the top for him as a challenge, if there had been a chicken up there then easy……….and yes they dig like billyo and can climb trees.

It’s a terrier! If it wants out it will do it. I had one could climb ladders onto roofs and dig like there was no tomorrow. I left him in the van once and there was a tin of cat meat I bought in the door pocket when I returned he’d bitten the lid off and eaten the contents. He was a true terrier but lots of fun to have around never a dull day. 🙄

Funnily chickhens aren’t a big attraction for my terriers. Now hedgehogs are a different matter, they drive them nuts!

Six foot might do it. We had one that would jump about five to six foot, then use sheer terrier determination to scrabble another foot or so vertically to clear the gate. Don’t be surprised if he jumps over, nips the neighbours for daring to walk past then jumps back.

Suitably motivated my Jack Russel can climb a chain link fence !

My brother-in-laws Russell could nick darts out of the treble 20 on a dart board. However if it takes a liking to the chickens it could always dig under the fence too!!!

Look at it the other way, If the chicken owner isnt using electric netting to protect his chickens then he should! A fox would be more likely to get in.
5′ fence for you though and learn how to control your woofer.

Not JR but principle is the same. I had a Springer that would climb a 8 foot fence then make a leap to get over the overhang above his head! Regularly . A bit like bunny hops on a bike, I don’t even understand how that was possible even after watching it. If the dog wants chickens you need concrete floors and a roof! or a small elctric fence!

My Jack Russell used to climb an 8 ft wall pretty easily with a run up. Fantastic tough little dogs!

Dunno how high it would jump to get to the chickens but it would be a fair bit higher on the way back if they were mine!
