Not sure if I had my Rockhopper 20 years ago, I might have just bought my Rocklobster frame.

Going from 1994 ’cause I know I had my Rockhopper then:
    9
    1994 Rockhopper (complete bike)
    1995 RockLobster (frame only)
    1998 Orange X2 (frame only)
2001 Stumpjumper FSR comp (complete bike, insurance payout)
2009 Stumpjumper FSR elite (2nd hand frame only)
2011 SC Heckler (2nd hand frame only)
    2011 RockLobster (frame only)
2013 Cotic Soul (2nd hand frame only)
    2014 Banshee Rune (frame only)

My ’94 Rockhopper (and a 1988 Giant Sierra) are the only complete bikes I’ve ever bought.

    – and a Charge Mixer (Alfine), nearly forgot. We didnt get along at all – imo looked great and business-like for the commute – but 30lb weight with a brick-weight rear hub that loved potholes like an anchor loves the ocean floor? Bah. I wanted to like it, I really did.

10 by my count (11 in total for my 22yrs of mtb-ing). That includes 2 sub-£100 rat bikes that I had for commuting and which were subsequently stolen. 7 have been nice mtbs, and one cheapie SSCX, and I currently still own 4 of them.

2 or 3 for me (as a main mountain bike, At least 6 commuters)
1990 Saracen Ltd edition bought new
    2002 A 1997 spesh ground control
The spesh is a bit triggers broom in that every part has been replaced including a ‘new’ stumpjumper frame so I’ll concede that it is a 3rd bike.

I am thinking about a new one but with upgrades and tweaks I’ve got it riding just how I like.

    6. One was stolen but I’ve still got the rest, although 2 are basically just tired frames with a few bits on.

Last one was bought in 2013, and it’ll probably be a few more years before there’s another new one.

GT Outpost, GT Vertigo, KHE Catweasle, DK General Lee, Giant Boulder Alu, Diamond Back something-or-other, GT Chucker, Diamond Back Overdrive, Sunn Tzar (Al frame), DMR Exalt, 1994 GT Performer, 1998 GT Performer, Kona Stinky and now Sunn Tzar (CrMo frame) + Commencal Absolut CrMo + GT Pro Series XL + DK General Lee 24 + GT Fueler.

Dunno really. 18-ish? Ish. Only four decent MTBs though and those were built from parts apart from the ally frame Tzar.

I’ve only been riding 10 years, well I rode a bit in the 90s but I had a long break.

2005 GT I-Drive Halfords special, it was actually a late 90’s frame wrapped in low end kit. cost £600, spent as much again making it decent – sold it for £150 12 months later.

2006 Enduro Expert – probably the best bike I ever owned, rode it every week for 5 years, cost me £2000, by the time I was done it had had a new fork and shock under warrant, new wheels, new crank, new bars, several seats and drive trains, and a set of chain stays.

2007 Norco A-line, a tank of a bike, weighed more than the moon and I crashed it A LOT, but great fun to ride.

2008 Cove Shocker custom build, went a bit mad speccing it, cost me £5k in the end, brilliant, amazing bike, but I released I hated racing (and still do) so it mostly sat in my living room looking nice – except the odd uplift day or week in the Alps – I actually boxed it up for 2 years after an accident in 2009, pulled it out again in 2011, rode it at Afan (lord knows why) crashed, bashed up my ribs and spent a few weeks in pain – flew to Canada and rode it for a week in Whistler – a sort of homecoming for it. Had the best time, saw my mates on lighter 6″ bikes going just a quick – realised I was never going to be a proper downhiller anymore after the accident, also released it was pretty much new even though it was 3 years old now because I never rode it – sold to a chap in Greece – really, really miss it now, especially since BPW opened 30 mins from my house.

2011 Spicy 516 – sold the Enduro and the Shocker to buy it. Have to say, not a great bike – very fast out of the box thanks to the insanely light wheels (for that type of bike) but the open bath damper on the forks was appalling – very inconsistent, the tubeless set-up didn’t work and the tyres were terrible (non black chilli contis) so you had a bike that was incredibly fast to accelerate, with no grip and a fork that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t – coupled with the brilliant, but insanely sharp Formula brakes made it a bit of a wild ride. I refused to believe it was anything but perfect though and blamed myself, in the end some scrote nicked it.

2010 Spicy 316, bought with what little money I had from a Roadie who bought it on a whim, rode it once, crashed it and sold it. It only had a single mark on it right on the part of the chain stay where it bends, it looked on the photos like a dent, I’m sure he thought it was a dent, but it wasn’t it was just a little mark in the wrong place. It rode better than the newer 516 if anything, but the fork was equally as bad until I worked out the previous guy had turned the rebound so many times past the stop it had snapped the shaft meaning it was like a logo stick – easy £5 fix. Rode that till last summer.

2013 Cove G-Spot, missing the Shocker and always wanting one made be buy a suspiciously cheap G-Spot frame online, it’s been repainted cheap and nastily over the original paint, it’s got a little dent in the chainstay but it’s wonderful – like a mini-shocker, it’s pretty heavy but it climbs okay, it’s more at home on faster trails, it’s a bit too slow to spin up on the slower stuff and it can be a bit frustrating, but given a bit of gravity and space it’s a proper hooligan bike. Going to try to lighter tyres soon to try to speed it up a bit.

So, 10 years and if you discount the foray into DH bikes, 4 bikes – my ‘cheap first bike’ which I think most people have and ditch for a better one soon after and one that got nicked.

    1990 Orange Clockwork.
    1999 GT XCR 4000.
    2005 Orange Evo 4.

    2009 Orange 5 AM.

    Currently:

    2007 Orange Clockwork.
    2014 Orange 5 29.

I’ve had a nasty retrobike habit for a fair few years but to be honest I have not ridden many of them much except the 1993 Orange Clockwork and 1993 Orange Vitamin T I used to have.

Other retro that have passed through include Orange Prestige x2, Orange Aluminium Elite x3, Orange Clockwork/C16 x5, Marin Eldridge, Bear Valley, Pine Mountain (all 1990/1), Diamond Back Ascent EX + Apex, Saracen Tufftrax x3, Kili Racer, Eiger, Orange Aluminium ‘O’ x2, Raleigh Dynatech, various GT, Ridgeback, Univega……

Currently have a 1990 Marin Pine Mountain, 1989 Saracen Tufftrax, 1992 Orange Elite and 1989 Orange Clockwork in various states of disrepair.
