I like to follow people in the bike/leisure design biz as it’s an area i’m interested in moving into in the future.
I use it to do basic research and find live information on products, brand perception.

    And for a personal use:
I use it to communicate with friends instead of facebook.

so does that mean i should follow you oggles and paulosoxo ?

and what does the # mean?

and if you follow me @robinlh then you’ll find me really boring i imagine.

    but your welcome to.

and if someone asks a q on twitter do they expect an answer even if you don’t know them, but follow them and maybe they follow you.

    if you follow me?

…and I am not posting that in a ‘go google it’ way. Their help section is really good to explain the basics.

    …but to be kinda helpful:

and what does the # mean?

The # denotes the following word is a hashtag. Look at it like labelling. People put these into their tweets so they will be grouped with all other tweets with the same hashtag in the tweet. Click a random one and twitter should show you all relevant tweets to that hashtag.

I use it for following a few celebs I find interesting and for seeing what mates are doing/chatting to them in work hours. It’s easier for them to use than facebook at work and easier to talk to multiple people in one conversation than texting.

    I STALK CILEBRUTYS! (*)

I use Twitter a lot. I post stream of consciousness tweets, but I try to be vaguely interesting rather than “I’ve just had a poo lol”. I find it a good way to keep up with friends, and I follow a few celebs / non-friend accounts who I find interesting or amusing (eg, @genehunt and comedian @garydelaney).

    (* – Not really.)

I use it to keep up to date with bikey stuff as well as music & comedy.
Some bikey guys- shedfire (brant), cycotic (Cotic), great rock (Ed oxley), orange factory, on one, ragley, charge, nukeproof, hope tech.
There’s loads, I quite like it.

I like twitter a lot. I follow people I’m interested in, fellow cyclists mainly. compare that to facebook, where you get inane bollox about farms from people you haven’t spoken to in 20 years.

Don’t follow bike stuff as it doesn’t interest me really. Follow Reuters, Liverpool Echo, Autocar. Also follow a load of football hacks Like Henry Winter, Andy Dunn, Paul Heyward, Gabriele Marcotti etc.

My account is private too. Reason behind it is that whilst looking for jobs I locked down everything I could to try prevent potential employers finding something to put them off. Keep meaning to unlock it…

Well done! Obviously it still can be found if an employer or anyone else really wants to, but a good approach.

Be very careful what you put online, folks….

It got to a point where if they managed to find my usual username then the first hit on google was me posting about one of my toes on here, along with an image of my foot. :/

Don’t use it, I have an account and 3 followers despite posting nothing! It’s being rapidly turned into a marketing tool as I discovered last week.

Yeah I had a few companies start to follow me but you can just block them.

You could say that about anything though, adverts on here for example. Just block the randoms and if you’re following the sort of people, minor slebs mostly, that sell out and tweet about how luxurious there new Landrover is or that they can’t believe that it is not butter then maybe think about following people with a bit more integrity.

Personally I think the pros outweigh the cons. For some people it is useless and they do not need to use it which is fair enough.

Thought about it, got an app and account and several people following my sum output of zip, zilch and buggerall, then deleted the app as I couldn’t find a purpose for it over and above what I get out of Fb, as several of my musical Fb friends post using Twitter, and none of my personal friends do.

I get updates from news sites, blogs, and a select few musicians and comedians. @shitmydadsays is good too.

Don’t tweet much, but sometimes retweet good stuff for my mates.

I use it to drive some traffic to my local mountain bike site (@bikeLamb) and I have another account I use for professional purposes – have made a lot of work connections there by posting interesting relevant stuff, asking and answering questions and then building a relationship. Have met loads of people in the real world that I first met through Twitter, and have been invited to speak at conferences etc as well through it.

It does take a bit of time, and following random celebs is in my view pointless. Find real people with similar interests and get involved in a conversation. And a closed account prety much means most people won’t follow you (as they have no idea what you are saying and if it is interesting to them).

I use it for having a bit of banter with people, keeping up with news and putting up some of me photos/blogs. Some companies also watch it closely, I’ve put up a couple of moans about stuff (scotrail, simplyelectronics) and it got sorted out really quickly. There’s always some random stuff and weird followers but it doesn’t really cause a problem, at least for me.

robob, I doubt you’re stalking people (maybe you are….) there’s no point in it if you don’t use it to interact with people I think. Just have a look about for people who’re into stuff you’re interested in and follow them, if they’re interested in your tweets they’ll follow you back.

Its bloody brilliant for F1 geekery. I have been boring my wife the past week with how McLaren might be running their exhaust! @_I_Ache

Yep, F1 seems to have properly gone for Twitter with drivers, official team feeds, unofficial team feeds, photogrpahers, journos & geeks all posting loads of stuff. No doubt someone will be along to say MotoGP’s twittering is better though.

    MotoGP’s twittering is better though.

It’s more skilful and you know it. They are just more concise 😉
