A few years ago I slipped on some concrete and somehow bollixed my left hip so that it’s now got a semi-permanent ache and reacts really badly to pressure such as sleeping on the wrong side, so you can imagine what it’s like when I come off my bike and land on a root or something. I’ve been looking at the body armour stylee underwear but these look more suited to radical shredding of the gnar rather than the light jeycore XC that I do. Anyone got any reccomendations for something that might add a bit of protection while still allowing all day pedalling comfort? (Other than suggestions to MTFU/see a quack)

You could try some of the relatively light weight snowboarding hip protection. A friend of mine uses motorbiking stuff that is supposed to solidify on impacts but is relativley soft the rest of the time.

I have some light weight shorts with padding over the thigh and hip.
Think 661 made them. Cost me about £30 and are light enough for jeycore riding (mesh covering etc) although obviously warmer than wearing no padding.

Feel free to drop me an email tonight if you want more info.

(I use mine after taking a wee crash that put me in hospital for a week with a thigh haematoma)

Decathlon sell some lycra shorts with hip padding. Not very expensive either. Padding’s not my thing so I’ve not really looked at them and the website is a bit rubbish but they might be on there.
    I hope that helps.

I can empathise with you Purist. About two years ago I hit the wood partition infront of the tunnel at the bottom of the Cwmcarn DH track, pretty much at full speed. I smashed into the concrete wall with my side and I still have a substantial swelling over my right hip that adds an inch to my waist line. While it doesn’t hurt so much these days, it still looks like a collostomy bag when I wear slim fitting trousers!

Your gonna have toasty bits, that’s for sure. Snowboard pants may be the way to go as typically they tend to favour soft pads as opposed to the hardshell style you get in most dh padded shorts. Someone above mentioned the impact gel shorts – I dont know what brand makes them but there is a link from the d30 gel sight. The might be the jobs if they were light enough. Soft and flexy until you bonk em.

What Brant said. But, you’re going to need a time machine, unless they’re the next Shed Fire product to be launched 🙂

Cheers all – found some of the 661 versions that StirlingCrispin referred to so will give them a go first.

I bought these for the same reason. (fox launch)

Came off a few times and landed on my hip and it hurt like hell (had loads of brusing)
