Headset cups – wear ?

Having just dropped the fork out of an XL2 headset to send off for a service I see that the inner bearing surfaces on the headset cups have lost their black paint and are shiny metal. Wondering if this is normal or is it indicatve of a bit of wear, leading to play, and suggesting I should stick in new cups ?

As long as the cups are not rough and pitted you should get a bit more life out of it.

shiny is ok, it’s just where the bearings run. if you run (the ball point of) a biro round the track, you can feel if there’s any roughness
