We’ve been informed by a source at the event that the organisers have decided not to include the canyon gap jump as part of the Red Bull Hardline cour …

Wonder where they will route the riders instead?

The Matt Jones video seemed to show the longer start going past the original woods before going down towards that canyon. Now they have three days to build something else – or go back to the original track.

Was it ever going to be in it?

surprise…surprise, the cynic in me would lead me to consider that it was built/shown to get clicks for more viewing figures

@Kramer was thinking the same as soon as I see this

Nearly killing someone certainly is one heck of a publicity stunt

After watching Matt and Bernard’s videos, i think it might be the needlessly dangerous jump I’ve seen.

I’m assuming they’ll just put a cool rope swing or something to cross the gap!

Good call. I mean seriously wtf?????

I did wonder why In BK and MJ’s vids they didn’t approach the jump from higher up the track? Im not familiar with the place but when they were testing other sections they appeared to arrive at the bottom of the jump somehow? then scrambled back across to hit it – perhaps there is no track above it….

Bernard Kerr said on his vid that the smaller gap further up the track didn’t look like it would work as it would be hard to carry enough speed on the run in to clear it. It didn’t look like there was any way of getting past that without jumping it so they ended up riding the old track down to the landing of the bigger one

Shame. I was thinking of giving it a go. 😐

Matt Jones said that it needed a different radius, maybe they just decided it was too late (and dangerous) to mess around with it this late in the day. I guess we will know if its back next year.

BK’s trackwalk once again makes you realise how difficult the wheels on the ground bits are, nevermind the jumps! I had a tumble just yesterday on some Welsh slate/bedrock, slick old stuff…

Looks like they got the angles/forces calculation wrong.

Which makes me wonder just how much the Athertons had to do with designing it and if they weren’t involved was it because they were too busy building and preparing the actual track?

In the original Matt Jones YT video they are riding the new top section down from the start until they can see the wooden hip over the stream.

They then go down to the ‘landing’ side of the canyon jumpy to wake up on the 90ft jumps(😳) before turning their attention to the canyon.

It looked like they could ride from the new top section to the landing side of the canyon so maybe there is a B route that they can develop to get them there.

If they do that then they’ll be missing the original big cliff jump and the cannon jump out of the woods.

Its Wednesday today so I guess we’ll know soon what the route is for this year…

    This.

Never mind the net debate or the fact that I’m neither a physicist or a canyon jumper. It looks like they need to rethink the whole ensemble to make it work.  The compression at the bottom of the slope is on the limit, the flat run in is short considering the speed they carry and the only thing they had the space to  correct with that existing structure is the kick on the jump itself.

That’s definitely what it looked like for Jim Monro (couldn’t really see the compression on the videos of the other two).  Looks like he got squashed at the bottom of the compression and couldn’t get back in the right position before the lip.

Think I mentioned it earlier but on that compression my first thought was Kerr’s frame failure and how that would have turned out on this gap.

Glad I got to see Bernard and Matt Jones do the gap. Shame it’s not in the race, but hey ho. It’ll still be fun.

Makes sense to be honest. One mistake and its RIP.

The compression at the bottom of the slope is on the limit

Cam Zink said that was the problem in the comments below Matt Jones vid on Instagram,  the take off looked OK but the compression at the bottom of the ramp was too much and too close to hit it safely

Part of me wonders whether it’s a proof of concept before they put all the earthworks in?

i heard a rumour that its been canned as they couldnt get a big enough safety net in time?!

I’d be surprised if you could.  But the bigger issue would surely be anchoring it to things on the ground.

TBH though the issue doesn’t seem to be coming up short, it’s getting thrown off the bike or overshooting the landing. In all the videos the riders have just rolled into it at walking pace and still had issues with the forces involved.  If there had been genuine concerns with coming up short then they’d have added a net from the beginning. The problem comes when you send them down it under racing conditions and they’re trying to shave 0.1seconds off the feature by pedaling into it.

For an average weekend warrior, yes the problem would be a gravity induced mishap into the valley below, for anyone competent enough to be invited to the race it seems to be not getting smeared across the opposite hillside that’s the issue.

At least it’ll make a good quiz question in several years time. At Redbull Hardline Wales 2024 which two riders…
