If you can, get out and enjoy our green and pleasant land.

I'll be heading for a walk amongst the bluebells and blossom, ending with a pint or two and a ploughman's in a beer garden

I'll celebrate by having a doner kebab for dinner and washing it down with some vodka.

Anyway, isn't this all a bit religious?

Unless there is another Lynch on this forum that I don't know about what do you mean by when I "get here" ?

I posted the second post on this thread with the traditional "you're a racist" St George's Day greeting.
I fail to understand how you could have missed it.

Why should it be a crime to celebrate our country's saint?
We quite happily celebrate St Patrick's and St David's day.
Only in Britain would we be afraid of celebrating our heritage for fear of upsetting others who share our country.

Shakespeare's birthday as well, apparently, if you don't fancy the religious angle.

Does it no' make ye proud tae be English?

I'm sure I speak for all STW's petty chauvinists when I wish our friends in the south a rather splendid national day.

I'm not sure people don't celebrate St. Georges day through fear of offending, I just think that most people aren't interested, or don't see the point.

Happy St Georges day. Sun is out, and no one tried to kill me on my ride in this morning. Might celebrate with a bacon butty when the butty van comes round later.

Oh and happy birthday Globalti.

I'm celebrating with a day long, cocaine and alcopop-fuelled Morris dancing marathon, dressed as the Bishop of Bath and Wells?

Anyone fancy joining me?

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;

Blah Blah Blah

In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,

Blah Blah Blah

Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.

Blah Blah Blah

I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Yes I know, said on St Crispins Day... then lets make 25 Oct a bank holiday too

I'm so surprised that this day hasn't been as commercialised as all the other national days... but then, that may be a bit too outgoing for we reticent brits.

What other "national days" ?

And I don't know about it having anything to do with being British, the only country that I know of which creates a big song and dance on the feast day of their patron saint is Ireland. None of our other closest neighbours do.

I don't even know who the patron saint of the United States is, and everything about American culture seems to be rammed down my throat care of the TV. Has the US even got a patron saint ?

Well they've certainly kept quiet about her. Is this due to American reticence about appearing to be overtly patriotic ?

Every St George's Day we get the predictable why can't we be more like the Irish whinge.

Maybe St George's is chosen just beacuase we could have so many?

The french have Bastille Day, the Germany's reunification, the US indy day... Martin Luther... veterans day

So what could we have ?? How about a Rememberance day? A Darwin day or Newton day? Waterloo day? Queen's Bday ..... Thatcher Day 🙂

A Magna Carta day would be good it as falls on 15th June... half a chance of a bank holiday with good weather.

So what could we have ??

We have August bank holiday. Which to be fair is as much of an institution as any of those others. We don't need a reason, it's just a day off in the summer 🙂

Or we could also argue that Christmas takes the place of a national day - it's a much bigger deal here than in most other countries.

As a Scottish person I deplore this english celebration of the oppression of another minority group. First they came for the dragons, and I said nothing because I wasn't a dragon!

I enjoy celebrating the memory of a fisherman from Galillee whose (partial) remains were bought to a foreign land by monk from Patras. Perhaps its the reeling and the wee drams that go with it? Oh, and (like the Shakespeare connection) its also Winston Churchill's birthday.
