Gravel rims (24 hole perhaps) at a reasonable price?

Current wheels are 1900g (DT 460db on Shimano hubs)

I’d like to drop a bit of weight, and have some 24h hubs. I also notice Hunt do 24h wheelsets (Four Season Gravel)

I was thinking maybe Stans Alpha 340/400 might give a nice light wheelset. They could be kept as road wheels if not robust enough for gravel use (75kg rider)

I also have some 32h hubs so what rim would you recommend for this setup? Unlikely to go above 40c so nothing too wide.

Contenders so far are WTB KOM I19, Stans Crest.. and that’s it.

Open to complete wheelsets but seems silly to splash £340 on Hunts if I have hubs..

I have 2 x Brand new Alpha 400 24 hole (rim brake) rims for sale if they are any good. £65 Posted for the pair?

Thanks but looking for feedback first.. Any thoughts on suitability? Complete wheelsets with those rims were reviewed as flexy..

I have a hope hubbed set of the Alphas on my road bike and they seem spot on. No different to my 32 versions TBH. I have not used them off road though

Hunt 4 Season Aero Light Rims are available in 24h and are 430g. Only 17mm internal.

Crests are okay so long as you’re never going to exceed 50psi. They’re not great to build with through neither are Alpha 340s or 400s. They’re all a bit noodly.

The DT R460DB is only around 450 grams and available in 24 hole (I have one on front of my bike) and half the price (Hunt site says that rim is 485 by the way).

Can’t see you saving that much weight over the r460 rim if sticking to an alu rim so would all be in the spokes and hubs.

How about some Kinlin TL 23 from spa cycles for the 32 hole rim? Lightish, cheapish, build up nicely (I’m just building a set). Spa use them on some of their stock builds, their wheels are well thought of by the touring community.
Plain old black though, so no bling if that’s your thing

It’s really not 485g, it’s 430g, but it is £30 more expensive to save 20g.

Kinlin XR26 would be strong enough in 24 hole.

Re-badged Alex Rims ATD01 – 19mm internal / 24mm external for £17, stated 410g but another 10% on top of that would still be good for the price, noticed these the other day & bought a pair for a lighter commuting setup – thinking Novatec D411 & Pillar 1420 spokes, should come in about 1500g, Wiggle / CRC seem to use them on a couple of their Prime wheel builds in a similar build

I’ve got one 24h and one 28h Stans Alpha 400 rim if you’re interested? Machined brake track (no wear – were built on disc hubs) true to within 1mm. Both within a g or too of 400g.

just noticed you’ve got 2 x 24h hubs. never mind!

Nah, 579 is about right for a 28mm deep rim. Besides, the picture shows it’s a 622 spec wheel which is 700C.

24h for gravel? I would not consider anything less than 28h for road riding and definitely not for gravel.

And I’m not particularly heavy.

Just had bad experience with low spoke count wheels and wouldn’t want to repeat it again.

If you have 32h wheel and you will shatter one nipple or spoke you are about OK to ride further, probably only a tad more careful.
Once you are one-less on 24h it is all going into Bavarian Pretzel…

Had both, since then avoiding low spoke count wheels like a plague.

+1 for using more spokes. 450g alu rim and 24h spokes won’t make a stiff wheel imo
