I used to love my old original Reign (hence the name) and am eyeing up the 2010 Reign X frame.

Can anyone tell me what sort of weight the Large is (with air shock)?

Also how do they do as all-day bikes, are they too soggy / iron everything out?

I'm thinking of building one up as a true do-everything beasty but need it to be lighter enough for long Peaks rides..

    oh.. and show me yours!

Well I used to use my old 2005 Reign for all day rides and it was great…

it's not so much the weight, more the pedalling soggyness if any (not that my old one was mushy)

    and a US review here:-

Want one but there are no medium frames in the country.

I think it's 5 years now . . . . It does seem though that a few manufacturers are having trouble with the balance between weight and strength on the new breed of do-it-all bikes . .

. Remedy, tracers, reigns and a few others . .

Here's mine – custom build on on 2010 Reign-X frame. Set up for DH.
Think it all depends on your build spec – as to being an all day bike. Keep it light + maybe go air front + back you could get to sub 30lbs. Mine is 37lbs but aim was for little uphill but lots of down.

    ooh very nice zangolin! .
    What size is that?

Do you use it just for dh then? What made you choose that rather than a faith, for example?

    It's medium.
Plan was for a do it all bike but has morphed into mainly a downhill one. Stick some single ply tyres + it pedals ok.
More fun downhill + likes to fly!

I have used my 2007 Giant Reign X on longer rides, and to be honest, the main thing stopping me doing it more often is the weight. Mine is built up to about 34-35lb all in, with reasonably light tyres but strong cranks, pedals and bars. It pedals brilliantly, but after a while hauling a 35lb bike up the hills has more of an effect on your energy levels than hauling a 25lb bike up hills does!

iirc the new 2010 frame is over 1lb lighter than the older frame, so with a more "XC" orientated build, could probably get close to 30lb yet still be good fun on the downs. But to me this would kinda miss the point of the bike, as to me the Reign X is pretty much a mini DH bike, just with the ability to pedal uphill if you need to. They're long, low and quite slack, and as a result egg you on to do and try silly stuff when you're riding. To run one with XC parts would either limit its fun potential, or mean broken/bent parts too often IMO.

Think I would agree with mboy about weight + aim of the Reign-X – defo more of a mini DH bike.
Trance-X or the plain Reign would be my choice as an all day bike.

yeah i can see what you're saying – thing is i really need something capable of xc but also the odd dh day and the standards reign's forks are a bit too wimpy and it's a bit steep . .

Reign-X then with adjustable forks – sorted.

How does 6.7'' travel feel though, on "normal" all-day rides e.g. trail centres?

Does it just iron everything out, make it a bit boring etc?

Of course its going to make it boring, some riders raced dh world cup's on 7 inches of travel not too long ago.

If most of your riding is at trail centres or xc stuff then build a bike to suit and just cope with it for dh tracks.

I ride mainly xc or dirt jumps so I ride a hardtail. I still ride dh once per month but just put up with the fact its going to be a bit rougher than a full suspension bike

Well you say that but my old 6'' reign didn't feel boring and tbh my average XC route has lots of gert big rocks involved so the 6''er was always fun..

just wondering how much difference the extra travel makes.

re hardtails.. mine isnt really the sort of thing you want to DH on (steel frame with rebas) and Wharncliffe does warrant some squish to be enjoyed at anything other than a plod imo..

On "normal" rides you would find you have to put more effort into having fun. More to do with the weight than the supension travel or geometry IMO though.

Basically, the Reign X is a pretty playful bike for it's travel, it encourages you to do more and more and seek out the rough lines to pop off things. They jump brilliantly, the geometry is spot on, and the weight is all pretty low in the frame… But the weight will be a real bind on climbs, you'll have to drop to your easiest gear and sit and spin very soon on a climb, whilst your mates are still in their middle ring and out of the saddle stomping on the pedals.

I've ridden mine on slow group xc rides for a laugh, and I coped fine. But I struggled like mad doing a lap of whites level at Afan trying to keep up with 2 fast boys! They left me for dead, then I was too knackered to enjoy the downhills anyway as a result! If the pace is slow though, and you're prepared to endure slow and steady uphills in order to beat everyone else on the way down, the Reign X is a mighty fine beast. And it's also probably the most capable allrounder in the 170mm travel bracket there is, whilst also handling like a mini DH bike on the way down…
