Just put a new cable in my drive train- 11 Speed SLX shifter and XT rear mech but I can’t seem to get all the gears. It is as if a click has disappeared. I can either get top or bottom ten cogs but not all eleven at the same time. Even when I checked the shifter before putting the cable in, it seemed to have a click short but I just thought I had misheard.
What simple mistake have I made?

Fitted the cable to the mech incorrectly?

I don’t think so but I will have another look!

I’d be checking the model number on the shifter
    (they make a 10 and an 11 in 7000 series don’t they?)

The only thing I have changed is the cable, the shifter worked with all 11 gears before.

Is there a switch in the underside of the shifter? Some of the shimano shifters can be 10 or 11 speed and change with a little swithc. If the shifter itself wasnt clicking 11 times even before you put new cable in this may be it

10 clicks for an 11 speed.

I thought the under-shifter switch was only for 2/3 speed?

Did you click the shifter all the way to top before attaching the cable?

Clicked as far as it would go before attaching cable and definitely no switch of any kind.

Undo and hold the inner cable by hand while working through the shifters ten clicks, working the shifter without a cable might have upset something internally, if it doesn’t work take the cover off and investigate.

sometimes with no cable tension the lever does not click thru all the way to the end. Detach the cable, pull on it and click thru to make sure its right at the end

Finally disconnected cable and yes there were only nine clicks even with no tension.
I then took the various covers off which showed the mechanism wasn’t activating the last ratchet. Levered it back and forth with a small screwdriver and it eventually began to work. Put it back together with a dab of grease, attached cable and I have 11 gears again. I still don’t have a clue as to cause, nothing seems bent or broken. I think I might invest in a new shifter soon to avoid a repeat faff.
