Garmin or Bryton?

Thinking of getting either a Garmin 510 or Bryton 50.

Anyone got any thoughts or experience of either?

The Garmin 500 is going cheap too with HR monitor and cadence monitor, but would the touch screen of the other two make life easier?

Depends what you want them for (recording ride details, following routes, nav-as-you-go etc.), personally I’m waiting on the Bryton 60 (already have a 500 and 705 and if I never have to give Garmin another penny for their lacklustre, over-priced and buggy garbage then I’ll be happy).

I’ve got a Bryton too. Does everything a Garmin can do. Only downside being the website, but you can export GPX files to the Garmin site or whatever other site you choose so inferior software is no longer an issue.

Got a Bryton 50 and have been pretty impressed. The new 50 comes with os maps so I’m hoping there will be a free upgrade.

I’m considering the Bryton 50 with OS maps as I really cant justify the cost of a Garmin 800 and want the mapping option.

50 WITH OS maps, great bit of kit, does everything ….

FuzzyWuzzy, what’s wrong with the far in 500. I was thinking of getting one, has yours not been that reliable?

I went through this process a month or so ago coming from an Edge 305.

That was a great unit but I wanted mapping. I I looked long and hard at the Bryton before going with the painfully expensive 810. What tipped it for me was that it’s a Garmin, with a bit of work pretty much any map can go on it, the virtual partner feature, and the phone connectivity and ‘watch my ride’ feature. Now I’ve been using it through some terrible weather, it hasn’t skipped a beat. The touchscreen is the real surprise. I thought it’d be a compromise, but even with thermal waterproof gloves on it works like a dream. The phone-based upload is also a great feature. As soon as you hit save during or at the end of a ride, it’s uploaded (in around 5 seconds) to Garmin Connects website, and Facebook and Twitter if you so wish too. Really excellent stuff.

@stevewhyte – nothing really wrong with the 500, it’s just pretty limited in what it can do and is over-priced for what it is. When I bought mine they’d just come out so had the usual buggy firmware to endure for a month or two but one bought now should be fine. Garmin’s updating routine is pretty pants to as is the lack of decent documentation (you shouldn’t have to scour Internet forums to find hidden features…).
My disdain for Garmin is more around the 800 & 810, if there was decent competition in the market then releasing the 810 now would be like Sony releasing the PS2 now as their top console.
I’ve pretty much given up expecting it will all change though so unless the Bryton 60 really does improve things considerably then I’ll probably just look at phone mount + battery pack options.
