Noooooooooo! Can’t we keep all the nasty noisy sheep scaring mountain bikers in Sallow Vallets rather than trying to expand their horizons? Nothing to see past Cannop. 100 odd mountain bikers strung out down Coxbury and Wyegate lane should be fun for the offroad motor bikers to negotiate on a Sunday afternoon though.

I wish the motoXers would stick to those lanes instead of tearing up drjohn’s. Bad enough repairing the damage after the last lot of extraction without them cutting furrows and breaking down the berms 👿 👿 👿

For those of you who may be wondering, Kev and Dave are the 2 sheep in the cartoon. They feature in many cartoons in the Forest of Dean Press.

Those are the tossers who thrash around Sallow vallets etc ra\ther than the legal users of C&W etc. MXers can’t use the lanes.

Howver you could find an arguement for local kids on quiet bikes riding in their own patch are as mcuh n the right as all the outsiders screwing up the Forest.
The whole thing is bloody pointless.
Is it really using C&W etc on a Sunday am? Dozy and no research. Its over used then anyway. Go and have a word with the woman who lives at the farm at the Redbrook end where flat gravel meets stones. Seriously she is trouble and will park here car in just the wrong place if you don’t talk to her.

Sorry but Drjohns would be a damn site better without the man made stuff.

Agree wrt MXers on lane… it rode better when there was more use – now its all chossy.

This chat is bringing back memories to me 🙂 Used to stay with a friend who lived at The Grove (Redbrook end of C&W Lane) back in the 70s when it was a 1 up,1 down cottage with chemical loo in a lean-to and water from the spring! Used to rattle down to Redbrook in an old Series II Landrover to partake of the hospitality of the Boat, Bell, & Bush and then try and drive back up the track at morning o’clock 8) It was a LOT rougher in those days, narrow and unsurfaced from just above Highbury Terrace.

The rock steps – an old County Highway I believe 🙂

Oh, rode your trail on Thurday night DrJohn; thanks to anyone that’s been keeping it clear. Line slightly changed up the bank after the little stream crossing but I remember when they felled the dark, spooky wood there some years ago and even riding the pallet bridge on your original trail so it keeps changing but stays good.

Over the years I have often thought a that decent cycle event could be run around the green lanes. About time too. There are tons to go at around St Briavels Common that are no longer motorised legal and too some extent are growing over. Bream lane from Bream Cross farm to the Bearse is another. Now what about extending into Whitebrook via the Boat and Penalt. I could go on for ever boring the world.
Maybe I should break the habit of a life time and ride a local event.
Or would the organisers like a hand?

we did plan to go over the river extensively, but this clashed with a running event, after dates were set, so the course was extended inside the FoD (Bixslade Loop), which I think is the best part,

F***! just typed shed lots then carelessly deleted. Brief,Rookery lane to traffic calming at Newland. Which way are you coming from Redbrook? Up from the school via French lanes is steep and fun or the Newland Valley is gentle . St Briavels common is laced. Mork hill down through the ford. Wyesham lane from top of Redbrook to Wyesham. Nice descent there. You might be able to get permission to come back to Redbrook via the railway. We use it in the Wyegate. Barn lane above the Boat on the funny side of the river and get to it via Washings lane from Penalt church.
Got to go now to the Miners at Whitecroft for tea then Climb on Bikes sportive thingy tomorrow. after much beers and the clocks changing!

I’m not really in a position to give out or confirm the course Matt, but I can say most of what you have mentioned has been considered, thanks for the pointers, I am more of a central Forester but we come out that way quite a bit on club rides, especially if DrJ is leading or involves a pint at the Boat

That’ll be interesting…

I ride through the Wye Valley about once a month en route from Bristol to the FoD and back (not in the same day). Good fun exploring the old broken down lanes and bridleways even if I do end up in someone’s garden or half way to Pontypool on occasion. The railway makes an easy flat option a lot of the way. Has anyone tried to ride through the Tintern to Tiddenham tunnel? Is it possible? A couple of pictures on the internet show locked gates but I know I walked in so far from the Tintern end a few years ago after a bit of bushwhacking to get there.

the fences at either end are serious barriers… and the rail bed/sleepers are still down. It is a long curved tunnel (so totally dark) – but it is dry. Mind the bats… they are protected!

number562554 if you ever get all the way to Pontypool let me know as there are some nice interesting bridleways around here to ride, especially if you don’t mind rivers and streams.

Many times. They put a fence up, but that was bent open the last time I went through. The Tiddenham end looked intact but someone had removed the nut from the bolt so you could move and replace the fence.

A hoot to ride by the way.Lights required.

So we have a difference of opinion as Jimmy Tarbuck used to say on … ummm… some crappy quiz show back in the 70s. The fence is either a serious barrier or easy peasy to get through. Guess I’ll have to go try it. Like I said, I know I got in easy enough on foot a couple of years ago from the Tintern end but I really can’t remember whether that was a squeeze through a tight gap. Guess I could undo the bars and twist them sideways if need be. Thanks.

A lot of planning and negotiations have gone into bringing this big loop event to parts of the FoD outside of the Sallow Vallets (Cycle Centre) area, so don’t miss out guys, there are no plans for entries on the day.
