Anyone flown with 16g CO2 cartridges on BA?

Just spoke to customer service and they said as long as the cartridge is less than the maximum permitted dimensions of the luggage they’ll be ok – given that the website says there are restrictions on the volume (50ml) it makes me think I didn’t get the correct answer….

Anyone flown with them recently on BA? Is there a maximum number you’re allowed to take?

I’ve got a mate who was held at gunpoint…like, men with guns pointing them at him, in Dubai airport before being marched off to a wee room to explain himself.

I’d just buy them when I got there, or take a pump.

Can’t buy them where we’re going (Molini in Italy) and I need them for tubeless.

I will take a load and see what happens.

CRC could deliver some to Italy for your arrival.

I’m a BA pilot. They are allowed by BA in your hold luggage. However, many security agencies dont, and will remove them.

dantsw13 without wishing to metaphorically nosh you off, does it feel awesome saying “I’m a BA pilot”. Have you got a tach and everything? Are you like this?

No tache, and a receding hairline – sorry!! It does give me time off to get out on the bike, like this afternoon though!!!!

This is a cut and post from ba.com:

    Restricted items needing no notification

The following list covers all items that may be carried on British Airways flights but are still restricted to specific limits on quantities or dimensions:

Aerosols – non-flammable for sporting and home use
Non-radioactive medicinal or toilet articles – hairsprays, perfumes, colognes, medicines, etc.
    Alcoholic beverages
Non-flammable, non-toxic gas cylinders – e.g. for operation of mechanical limbs, bicycle tyre inflation devices (max. capacity 50ml)
Devices containing lithium cells or batteries – laptop computers, cameras, camcorders, etc.
Spare lithium batteries (less than 100 Wh)

Annecdotal evidence suggests the TSA in the states have different rules, and will remove them.

So you should be ok in your HOLD luggage for Europe.

I have also been told to remove the extra over two when traveling back from France.

Never been told to take them out heading over there.

They were in my bike case (hold baggage).

Luton airport oversize x-ray complained when they saw four in my bike bag. They said two was the max. We are talking about the same ones as they have on the life jackets aren’t we?

IIRC correctly these fall under IRATA dangerous goods, if we send extra life jackets or survival suits in the hold of the helicopters at work we have to complete DG paperwork for them. Surprised the airlines are being sensible enough to let you carry them.

Some advice based on travelling recently with someone who had a gas cylinder for an avalanche airbag in their hold luggage –

Print out the bit from the BA web site saying it’s ok, and put a copy in your case preferably wrapped round the cartridges. That way if airport security find them you’re less likely to find your bag enjoying a controlled explosion.

Take a copy of the BA stuff with you to show to airport security and/or the captain on the flight – we ended up with the airport absolving themselves of responsibility and leaving it to the captain’s discretion whether to allow the bag containing the gas cylinder on the flight.

When you check in your bag don’t tell them it contains gas cylinders if they don’t ask. You would not believe what trouble and how many unnecessary phone calls round the airport it can cause.

Personally I wouldn’t bother having seen all the hassle (and having nearly missed the flight and causing the plane to miss its slot resulting in a walk of shame down the plane).

Fail to believe you cannot get them in molini ….. By cannot do you mean ‘ dont think ‘ ?

I use boxes of these things for testing at work all round the world and due to what oliver talks about above i have to buy in country and have never failed to get them in country ….. West african shite holes , eastern europe holes , uk and mainland europe.

Just dont let your tires down for the plane , worked fine for me in france 🙂
