Fitting Disc brake to rim brake frame

This is actually for a flat bar converted road bike. The purpose of this exercise has nothing to do with needing any more power or modulation etc, it’s just for the heck of it.

Recently came across my old silver Hope X2’s and thought they would actually look quite nice on the black carbon frame and carbon integrated bar.

It’s an ancient rim brake frame so if I swapped out the fork for a disc brake mount fork. Will the sheer brute force of my mighty Hope X2’s rip off my headtube like a turkey leg at Christmas and leave me eating tarmac?

Should be fine. Tyre grip will always be the limit of forces and fitting discs won’t make the wheels stop locking up at the same load.

I think you might actually struggle find a fork that fits!

Well when you put it like that, the answer seems so obvious and logical, even a baby could have told me that 😀

You’ve clearly got a good grasp of all the different stuff that goes on in a bike, hope you’ll be floating around here for a bit I’ve got some more oddball questions about this bike I need to post up!

I’m assuming its old as in 1 and 1/8 steerer.

Disk fork road bikes are not that old and most of them are tapered.

I imagine its even worse for options if you start looking at the skinnier tyred options.

Not really. Just been reading threads on here for a long time. Plus I have a flat bar ‘road’ bike with discs as well as a drop bar disc brake road machine. Both stop just like any other road bike.

sjs cycles have a 1 1/8 steerer carbon disc (gravel) fork at present, otherwise they are very hard to track down

I’ve done it with a steel 26″ mtb fork before, just look for one with about the right A2C, £25 on fleabay.

On the rear, I MIGHT have an old A2Z dropout adapter knocking about.

on your flat bar which shifters are you using? I have the tiagra 4600 shifters and find them super clunky I started another thread for it if you care to weigh in with your experiences..

I dont know when I’ll get round to doing the experimenting as I’m too cheap to go out and buy a decent set of disc wheels right now. Even though its just a training bike I use for hill sessions when I’m short on time (which is always so a quick 1 hour uphill stint daily does me good) I kinda like it being lightish, am going to put some cero ar30s on it and don’t want to fork out for another set of wheels just yet
