My dad is 84 and plays a golf a few times a week. He still does a bit of gentle hillwalking though he has cut down in the last few years. He was never much into competitive sport, other than wrestling, but was always active – cycling, golf, hillwalking, and rock climbed to a good standard with a number of first ascents in the 50s and 60s. One of his friends is 87 and still fairly active – holds the UK over 65 marathon record at 2:51. Both of them were active in various sports throughout their lives. Both drank very little and ate sensible diets. Eat well and stay active is the message I think. As soon as anyone retires and takes a chair in front of the TV the clock starts counting down.
Recently I was on my dads pitched roof extension doing a small repair for him and I turned round and saw he had followed me out on to the roof to check I was doing it right.
