I was in a high camper with Brompton. Had to wait for cars on mezzanine floor in front to disembark first before the floor could be raised to let us out.

we booked Hull-Rotterdam in the end. £375 return with the bikes.
it was the lesser of 4 evils.
drive to dover, park use ferry.
drive to portsmouth, park, use ferry.
drive to harwich, park use ferry.
    cycle to hull, use ferry.

@ton Next time park at mine in Ipswich and catch the train to Harwich or it’s a short ride to Felixstowe and Ferry to Harwich town (£7pp with bike) and then a short ride to Harwich International.

Missed the start of this a couple of months ago but may be helpful for the someone else in the future.

Its only a 4hr crossing! (5hr at night)

Thats interesting is dark air more dense, and therefore makes the journey slower ?

I guess that their operating procedures involve reduced speed for [some] of the trip when in restricted visibility / darkness.

Priced up the possibility of doing Portsmouth – Santander / Bilbao this summer then coming home Caen/St Marlo/Cherbourg – Portsmouth. £1700. Yeah, I’ll not be doing that. Who actually pays those fares?

I managed to get on the Hull-Rotterdam ferry on my preferred date as I phoned up and asked if they had room. The staff were really helpful.

I do feel guilty given the board’s shitty activities but it’s the most convenient way to get to Europe from West Yorkshire. We’ll have to give the staff a nice tip whilst on board.

I did the same for July from Rosslare to Spain, for car plus four, in the end we decided to give the ferry a miss and book a fly-drive + villa to Mallorca instead, almost the same amount as the ferry + villa costs but without the long car journey… but when I finally return to the Camino to complete what I began, I’ll look to the ferry + bike, it just appeals more somehow.

it is very nice just rolling off the ferry on the bike.

    yep, definitely!

I enquired to Stena recently about the set up for passengers travelling with bikes on their Belfast-Cairnryan route, as I’d prefer to put the bike on board myself rather than see it go on a trailer at the port and taken on-board, as I had read some places do (Holyhead?), but this is the nice reply I got back from their customer services:

    Hello,

    Thanks for your email.

You would cycle to the bottom of the ramp then wheel the bike over.

so I reckon a long weekend in Galloway Forest is in order 🙂

@tractionman we have done that with our tandem on a crossing to and from Larne, ferry operator was very accommodating.

We just booked Cairnryan-Belfast return in the summer. I have been on that boat for work a few times in the last decade for work. I know we booked the first week of Scottish summer holidays, but it has gone up 20% compared to last year similar time.
