re-cataloguing my collection recently (i know, wild crazy life innit) and showing my 11yr old, as it’s the first time he’s really shown interest. this gave me fresh eyes on some of the artwork on display.

however I’ll always be a die hard MacFarlane fan along with Jeff Smith, Sergio Aragonés and Mike McMahon.

would add some images but the forum appears borkeh.

Sienkiewicz, Ezquerra. McMahon… Hewlett, Bond, Bolland, MacNeil, Ezquerra, of course. So, so many 🙂

I used to really love Bisley when I was a teenager but looking at his stuff now… I dunno. Doesn’t ring my chimes any more.

tho there are so many I still love.

I know what you mean – it’s VERY much of its time. But his work on ABC Warriors and Slaine is pretty definitive for me.

There was something about McMahon and Dredd that just worked so perfectly:

Some artists gel so well with a particular subject that when I think of the character I see them in that style, no matter how many years ago it was – Ditko and Spidey, Kirby and the FF, Gibson and Robo Hunter or Halo Jones, Miller and Daredevil.

I think McMahon is my fave though. There were often little visual gags in the background of panels that can still make me laugh. I’d also add Jaime Hernandez for his Love and Rockets work. The way it evolved over the years so he used fewer and fewer lines and far less black yet the characters remained instantly recognisable – even though they aged, changed hairstyles and clothes, gained weight. He could tell you the precise emotional changes of a character just through facial expression or body stance. There aren’t many who can do that.

Not enough euro stuff on this thread.

How about Ronan Toulhoat and Didier Cassegrain.

I was a big fan of Bisley so he definitely gets a mention but I quite liked Martin Edmond (white Trash, Lobo and Chopper returns)

Jaime Hernandez, Dave Gibbons, Jamie Hewlett, Jo Burt, Mike Mignola, Grant Morrison, in particular ‘Doom Patrol – Mr Nobody is one of my favourite characters, oh, and there’s Ken Macklin and Lela Dowling’s wonderful ‘Weasel Patrol!

There’s probably a fair few others who’s names escape me now.

*Those Jo Burt illustrations are two of four that he kindly drew and painted for me at the Bike Show many moons ago – I really must put them in the frames I have for them…

When you think you’re okay at art then your pal from school just casually announces to you he’s just completed the front cover for 2000AD…
