Facebook "Reactions"……..

Do they challenge people, specifically men, to question how they really feel?

Prior to these, there was just a “like” button. You never really had to think about how you “felt” with regards to what you were “liking”. You just clicked the button because from the outset, the post stirred something within.

But now there’s a whole range of emotions you can choose from. Now you have to actually think “why am I having a reaction towards this? What is my reaction?”

Is this a good thing? And how do you feel it will impact on our society as a whole?

As a masculinist I feel they invade my safe space because I’m not in touch with my emotions.

Like.

It removes a lot of the ambiguity of a “like”. When someone’s really sad, for instance, but you think they’re a tosspot.

If only there was somewhere on the internet men had been able to practiced reacting with little pictograms before Facebook sprang it on us

(I don’t even know what that ones supposed to mean. ‘Nuanced ambivalence’ I think)

Man, I thought you were just a light hearted joker, a bit of a clown who preferred teasing people to making serious contributions to this forum.
Now I realise you’re so much deeper than that. You’ve brought such an important issue to the fore, challenging our collective preconceptions of the options available to interact half heartedly wih others through social media.

I like it as it accurately mirrors the range of emotion available to me as a man, on the other hand, I try not to think about my emotions and still like everything.

I find it stifles my emotional spectrum….

I put “sad” on a Hospital Consultant mate’s post which was anti-junior Drs strike… the symbol disappeared. Can people delete them? Still friends btw

it doesn’t really register on my givashitometer. I’ve only ever liked about three post sin my life (usually new puppies) and I certainly wasn’t worried then about the fact that that I was not able to express a range of emotions.

I don’t think they have given me a wide enough birth to explore my emotions fully through the artistic creations that are their select bank of emoticons. For example… where is the “dissaproving of a racist uncle” emoticon. My only retaliation as I clearly cannot confront the matter means I have to keep “crying” all over his wall.

I think the internet still has some “growing” to do and I’m glad to be along for the journey. I cannot wait to see emoticons v2.0

Apparently (and perhaps unsurprisingly) the Facebook advertising algorithms looks at your ‘reactions’ and tailor ads accordingly so it is allegedly more a tool to boost advertising revenue than giving users what they want.

Will diget out the link but a US security firm is advising people not to ‘react’ accordingly as it just increases your online profile for others to profit from…
