Eye lasering

New prescription means potentially a few new pairs of specs and after years of being a devoted glasses wearer I’m finally coming round to the idea of getting my eyes done.
What are people’s experiences/warnings/recommendations?

‘Eye lasering’, sounds painful. Do you send them off or something?

I had mine done following a lens replacement operation to fine tune the vision.
It was possibly the most uncomfortable 10 minutes of my life!!!
I was involuntarily moving my eye so it had to be clamped in place and this wasn’t nice at all.
Others haven’t had the same experience so maybe it’s horses for courses.
A couple if days recovery and it’s been ok since

Had both eyes done 10 years ago at Optimax in Liverpool and I can honestly say it’s the best thing I’ve done in a long time . A very uncomfortable first week but after it settled down it was spot on and still is .

The procedure (even the clamping!) is weird but fine–just don’t have espresso beforehand. For me the effects didn’t last very long and within a couple of years I was back to wearing glasses for all the same things as I did before. My corrected vision isn’t quite as good now as it was before and i can’t wear contacts. If I had the money I’d look into having a repeat procedure–being able to see unaided was great.

MrsMC had it done a few years ago, a friend works at Moorfields and mates rates were involved.

Got her from -8 to -0.5. No problems or regrets, best £3k she has spent apparently.

But no way is anyone slicing my eyeball open with a laser while I am conscious.

Mrs hippy had this done about 5 years ago. Still has better than 20/20 vision.
She’ll never forget the smell though.

You’ll never know what they are doing to you as its all so close that you can’t focus. The clamping bit is uncomfortable but not painful, the lasering takes ten seconds for each eye then half an hour in a dark room and job done. I drove home afterwards….

A friend almost lost his sight in one eye (will never recover)and spent a week in hospital sorting it out. Put me off completely.

Dearly beloved had hers done about 12 years ago, all’s good, from nearly blind to only using glasses for reading which I’d say is pretty much standard for a woman turned 50. Do it.

Absolutely amazing, genuinely changed the way I live life. -3.5 to 20/20 vision here. Had it done 5 years ago and only wish I’d done it 5 years before that. Do your research regarding where and who does the op. It’s something I felt happy spending more on to get someone with many happy customers to do it.

Yeah as above. Best money ever spent. Was -6 just over a year ago.

Waking up not having to fumble about for specs, in and out the pool on jols, not fannying with contacts on bike rides, amazing.

There’s a procedure that involves actual replacement of the actual lens in the eye with plastic ones that can be fine-tuned once in place, then permanently fixed at the best ‘resolution’, for want of a better word. The great advantages are that the cornea isn’t damaged in any way, and you’d never need to worry about cataracts, as the lenses have been replaced already.
Basic procedure is already very well established.

If laser eye surgery is such a great idea … why do you see so many doctors with glasses?

Think they wear them to look clever and hide the bags created by long nights of alcoholism.

Thanks for all the replies. Having read around it quite a bit I’m increasingly reassured that current techniques are safe enough. I’d be interested to know if anyone has any recommendations for places to get it done near north Wales or NW England.

Had mine done in the local shopping centre.. get a list of the surgeon operating at the clinic. Many are also consultants at hospitals so you can check their credentials.

Beware of any existing conditions. I didnt realise I had dry eyes and now I definitely know I have it.
Aftercare is really important and make sure you can get back to the clinic for all the followups. I would have loved to go to moorfileds but the idea of getting my self back to the clinic 24hrs through the pollution and london transport didnt really appeal.

The operation itself is relatively quick. I counted to 10 and it was done per eye. The feeling is very stange as the vision goes all kaleidoscope when its being done then black once the covers are on.

The light sensitivity is the main thing I have problems. I wear shades in summer and bump into things when the lights are out.
Also eyesight seems to change when I’m tired
All in all a worth while operation and sight is bearing up very well. 4+ years and still going well!

My missis had hers done 15 years ago now (Ultralase in Chester, I think it was)

She went from -8 in both eyes to 20/20 vision. Totally life changing 8)
