    Hello collective wisdom of STW.

Looking at getting some off road lights and looking at the Exposure Maxx-D. I see 2 versions and as far as I can tell the £50 extra gets you a Bluetooth remote (no idea what it looks like) and the ability to edit settings using your phone. If that’s it I’m thinking maybe not worth the extra, but am I missing a trick here? Would the remote work for multiple lights?

Those with one or more exposure lights, do you think a remote would be useful or does reflex do the job fine anyway?

Bonus question: Diablo or joystick for the lid?

    Thanks!

Reflex is pretty good, and the buttons on the lights are generally easy to use anyway.

I use a Sixpack on the bars, Joystick on the helmet. I do wonder if the Diablo would be too heavy, as I can barely notice the weight of the Joystick when riding.

I’ve got a MaxxD, tbh I don’t think I’d be bothered with a bar remote even if it was free. The reflex works OK.

I’m a huge exposure fan…but I’m starting to worry that as they become more complicated, it’s all a bit unnecessary..

For example: i’m on my second reflex maxx-d as the reflex simply doesn’t ‘work’ – the 6 hour setting runs down to flat in about 3 1/2 hours – it doesn’t seem to cut the power on slow climbs or on the flat… it’s way bright, which is cool, but it just doesn’t seem to last the full run.

I’d NOT go for the bluetooth option, TBH…. save the money.

I’ve got the remote with an ex demo Equinox that I bought from them at 24:12. I find it quite useful as the battery life on the Equinox is a fair bit shorter on full power due to its size so much easier to flick between the levels to eke out more run time.
I wouldn’t be as bothered with one of the bigger batteried lights like a Maxx D.

Why would you need a remote?
The beauty or this system is that it’s an inclusive package ..sits right in front of you on the bars and is easy to toggle between the settings …
I’ve got a mk1 Maxxd ( 740lumens ? ) which although it’s been superseded by more lumens in the newer models still works brilliantly after 10 years
Joystick for the helmet mount ..its not as heavy ..

I use a Diablo as my helmet light. It replaced a joystick. I don’t notice any difference in weight.

as DrP, sounds like gilding the lily to me.
6 pack and a diabolo on my lid here. weight is not an issue.

There is a 24g weight difference between the two in favour of the joystick ..thats nearly the weight of a whole packet of crisps.. 8)

How often do you, or are likely to, change settings? The “single button for everything” and using timed presses to get to different setup modes isn’t the easiest interface but is it really a problem?

I’ve a Joystick and have done so exactly twice in nearly a year: once setting it up when I got it and once about a month ago as I felt the super economy mode I’d chosen wasn’t appropriate.

I’d like the unit to power up in the lowest setting rather than high, should be easy to sort out with one of the unused programs. The comment about “gilding the lily” is apt – I suspect that a lot of the upgrades/new features are as much about marketing as engineering – “The XXX hasn’t been upgraded for three years now” type reviews.

now racing i could see the benifit of a remote – esp if it changed my head light and my bar light at the same time.

would set it up with 3 settings. MAx – for DH/nadgery shit – min for fire road and medium for trails.

would be quite nice instead of having to thumbling about on the back of my helmet guessing what is max prior to decending – or worse forgetting all together and knowing you cant change it without taking hands off the bars.

for general riding – just more faff to set up.

Id like it if they made some side visible light on their lights to make the light more suitable for road use and a switch on the revo would be nice too.

BITD you used to email them suggestions like this and youd get an email – usually from Rory explaining why they hadn’t done XY or Z and why not Or that they were on the next rev .. but alas not anymore.

Awesome, money saved on unnecessary sync covers the difference between joystick and diablo.
    Thanks!

got a toro and diablo on the lid. Diablo is fine but very short run times off road on max.

reflex on the toro seems to work. Much to my amazement.

Gilding the lily is not an appropriate term. You’re talking about a light for goodness sake. How can you compare a light to something that is of natural beauty. Ridiculous.

@trail_rat – racing did spring to mind after my previous post.

Short course races aren’t something I’ve done but I’d assume that there are parts of the trail that are transitional in nature so once you’ve been round a couple of times then you know that there’s a few seconds’ grace to switch between low and high, etc.

For road use you’d need some sort of fresnel lens to go on the front to focus the beam more and reduce glare affecting other road users. This could provide some side light.

agreed but at 3 in the morning you forget some things until its too late.

i ended up just fitting a B+M IQ-x and relegating the Revo to the MTB where the addition of a switch kit from Iguro solved the switch issue.
