Quietly impressed. Disciplined, looked threatening at times on the counter, always going to be dangerous at set pieces and if we don’t concede many that’s going to make us competitive.
Downsides – we had to work bloody hard, and can they recover from that effort to do it again on Friday, and then Tuesday, (and then…..) We have to keep the ball better, and it’s not a reflection on the player on the ball but the players off the ball making angles. Time and again we got the ball to AOC or Welbeck and they then had no outlets. It’s hard work being an England midfielder or wingback in that system, but the whole game plan is built on keeping the workrate up.
Lastly, and I’ve said it many times before, but it’s great to see it happening now. We should forget about trying to win the Euro’s if we have WC aspirations in the future. The competition is as hard – if not harder – than the WC; the groups have no patsies at all whereas in the WC with 24 sides and a proportion of the qualifications going to the ‘lesser’ continents, getting out of the group is nowhere near as hard. Use the Euro’s to bring on the likes of AOC, and Welbeck, and a few other youngsters too. If we do well, it’s a bonus, but it should be a 4 year cycle with the Euro’s being for experience and the WC for keeps.
