Echo fat rims – anyone built one up?

Look wide enough for a Larry at 47mm HERE but would it be better to wait for a Rolling Darryl which looks as though it should be reasonably light………. but 64 spoke!!

Alternatives and full wheel recommendations for 135mm non-offset axle please.

I’ve only used them on trials bikes. A bit overkill weight wise. If I were you I’d be looking for a single wall or magnesium trials rim to keep the weight down. You don’t really need a super strong rim do you, just a wide one?

Cheers balfa. I’d had a look at the Tarty complete wheels but there are some rims there that will do the job and are fairly light. The V!s is only 584 gms at 47mm wide but not cheap. I’ll give them a call shortly to see what the options are with a 135mm hub.

This 1/2 fat project is becoming expensive 😥

I was running a Larry on a 42 and it measured 88mm, but on the 80mm rim it is 98mm across.

I think these were 47mm, picked up cheap on ebay.

Have you drilled that out yet to save some weight or is it not too bad?

I’ve just suffered a major setback – the Halo Combat wheel I’ve just picked up for the rear doesn’t fit with a Nokian 3.0 grrrrrr. I can’t decide whether to do some serious nob trimming or just stick the thing on the front and put something smaller on the back. That would give a 1/4 fat though which is sort of pointless as all it does is increase weight without enough increase in float. 🙁

Maybe I’ll look for an old Inbred frame (which definitely does fit) as an interim measure.

Have had a thought that the Nokian was a 24″. Does anyone know if a 26″ fits? Brant ?

Put my new Larry on today and WOW – it’s amazing -a real game changer!! Rolls much faster,corners like it’s on rails and grips too 😀 put a big smile on face today.

What wheel/fork set-up did you go for ? Any pics?

Paul 135mm hub, speedway 50mm uma rim, Jones truss fork. Can post a pic if you want. You don’t need a double wall rim, the dishless construction that a 135mm hub gives you is very strong.

Ooh, that makes my ‘budget’ attempt look a bit pathetic. I have a Pugsley 135 zero offset hybrid fork so the Paul is out i believe (which will be a relief for the bank manager).

Pic would be nice if you don’t mind, as that sounds like a really nice set-up.

Not yet, I’m going to use it as is for a while because I have ideas for a lighter rim. The wheel weight with an Alfine hub is awesome.

(The spare holes are because the rim is a 36 hole, so I drilled a set of 32 holes to use the Alfine.)

Woody the rolling daryll rim is 64 spoke to allow one rim to be used for either inline or offset spoked…it should be light for its width..Surly must have noticed alot of there pugs are being built with other makes of lighter rims…if inline is what you need any 45mm and wider rim will do for a endo or larry tyre…i have 2 larry tyres on order for the strathpuffer…i will be spiking an old endo for the front if needed 😮

I’ve been having a bit of a think and the Turner 5 Spot on MTBR looks great and has got me wondering whether my ML8 will fit the Nokian 3.0. No problem on the front with the DUC 32’s which I’ve just measured at 97mm minimum width.

been recommended to use larrys both ends for mud riding…just for that then back to an endo on the back after…
then the spare larry will go on the new fatbike next year 😉

Does anybody know what’s the fattest 24″ tyre that’ll fit a 456SS? While you’re at it, what’s the fattest a 26″ Salsa fork will take? Or where can I get a fat fork cheaply?

from what ive read on the MTBR fatbike forum any 26″ wheel frame which will fit a 26×2.5 tyre will fit a 24x 3.0 tyre…and i think a 3″ DH tyre is about the biggest in 24″…
a 26″ salsa fork-if its the enabler will take a 4″ surly tyre…
cheapest option i think is a surly Pugsley adventure fork for around £90,
its a non offset (standard inline) fork and uses a standard 100mm hub and front disc brake mount so you only need to get a rim at least 45mm width to use a 4″ surly tyre and your rolling…check axle to crown lenghts on forks you use…the surly fork should be fine on a 26″ frame..its a bit short on a 29er,

Assuming the stays are the same width as the Inbred, a 24″ 3.0 Nokian Gazzaloddi fits as Brant had a pic with one in there. Also fits a Blue Pig apparently HERE. No idea re cheap forks, pity I sold my spare last week.

now you have me wondering – seemingly my new frame takes 29×2.5 – wonder what i could get in it on a 26/24″ wheel ! thus negating the need for a pug !

oh and bruce – i never got in touch last week as we were both too nackered from relentless 24 and riding with the knightsofniche during the week that a night ride was out of the question ! more like pass out in the wigwam !

So what’s a half-decent cheap rim to use? Where could I get the spokes to match? Would a Hope XC hub be enough?
I’m not in the UK so the German shop (link further up) looks good to me as the Irish Surly dealers had laughable prices last time I checked.

Hairychested; that is i think just a regular size xc fork and not the enabler,so a 4″ tyre wont go in there,any trials rim will do,kris holm website do them around £40 each and there good quality…spokes and any xc hub would be fine as just a regular inline wheel build,

trail-rat; no probs…catch up again another time 😮
you can run 26″ wheels with say 2.7 nevagals or similar in aKM frame but running 4″ tyres F&R is a massive differance in real soft stuff like sand…
but your set up may be ideal for a mudfest race 😮

i ordered 3 tyres when i built my pug,only one in UK at the time so got 2 from Jenson USA and at the time it worked out about the same price after import duty was paid, i will need my 2 spare endo`s once i get 2 larrys as planning on building a fat trailer 😮 to haul firewood off the beach 😉

Billy’s are quoting 2-6 weeks @ £85. Might be worth ordering direct from USA as IIRC import duty doesn’t kick in until value is over £150 on sporting goods (could be talking rubbish there though).

So, in a way, the best thing to do is to get an enabler and a full-fat rim, build it onto a SS hub and have it that that way. Mleh, too costly for now….

Cheers Woody – the Jones does seem to divide opinion 😀 – actually they’re quite difficult to photograph and look much better in the flesh. I recently asked Jeff if he was planning a full fat steel diamond frame (something |I’d love to have) – unfortunately he has no plans to make one 🙁
